In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

This is a little of my incar from the last National Race at Heartland Park Topeka. The Mustang got by me on the start and I was pushing him pretty hard. Show this to all your Mustang friends who think Camaros are slow. This is the Factory Steeda Mustang.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

Guys:

The SCCA rule require us to run stock 305 heads. Either the 081 or the 416. I run the 081. We are required to run a holley 600 CFM stock carb. Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. Compression is limited to 10.3 and valve lift is .480 with open duration. The engine is a .030 305 due to the rules. Pretty nice 305.

Even considering the restrictions this engine cost a bunch of money. For example the Stock Carb runs about $1000 after its been blue printed. It sounds great and runs like you can't believe. We can run either the T-5, T-10 or the Tremec 5 sp. I run the Tex Racing version of the T-10. No dogs rings and stock ratio's.

I use the Spohn Torque arm with a Torsen diff in a stock 7.5 housing with Moser axles. Shocks are pure custom. Olins in the back and Custom front Bilstins from the Shock Shop out in the Northwest.

This is a pure race car. It is one of the fastest A/S cars in the country. I out qualified a John Heinrcy last year at the National Championships but broke on lap 10.

I will be heading to the SCCA Runoffs this year in a couple of weeks wish me luck.

The car sounds great. I shift this thing at 7200 and it would go even higher but the engine builder has put a pretty hard stop at 7200.

I mirror is from Long Acre. Check Hoerr Racing Products. www.hrpworld.com

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I did that in a Legends car. Little mini nostalgia looking car with a motorcycle engine in it. Road course racing is so much more fun than driving around in a circle.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

That right there is awesome.
Care to share what the duration is on the cam, or is that a racing secret?
Any idea on HP output from that engine?
No dog rings in the T-10 eh? Wouldn't that make it really rough shifting? I know it's far from a street car, i'm just wondering if you get significantly less life out of a tranny due to that? Is it really "crunchy" when shifting?

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

Sonix:

I am not a tranny expert but what I meant by not a Dog Ring box is that the tranny guys can build what they call a dog ring box. This will allow you to shift without the clutch. I think it is like what the drag racers did when they filed every other tooth off of the dog rings. The tranny can engage much easier. Tranny life is down with this set up and it is not legal.

This tranny has all the regular parts they are just upgraded.

The cam is pretty strong. I well get the rough specs from the builder.

HP is a pretty closely guarded secret. It is way more then 1 hp per CI.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

Nope. 305 only. They have a list of casting numbers for both heads and block. Crank you can use any steel crankshaft instead of stock but it must still be the same journal sizes/stroke etc. ASedan motor are still big money tho. (Just one more reason I'm starting off in the NASA CMC series.)

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

Guys:

We are not allowed to run the 4 X 3 (302) at this time. We are trying to get this changed.

We really do not run for money. If I win a national race I get about $1,000 in money from various manufactures. We race for the fun of it.

The rules are somewhat strange. Like any racing you spend a huge amount of time trying to do what you need to in order to win within a rules. Check the SCCA out at their web site. www.scca.com. This is a great class. American Sedan. Camaros vs Mustangs. At the Topeka race we had 10 cars it think. Pretty nice field. At the Runoffs there will be over 30. The races are 35 minutes so no pit stops.

The car does sound pretty nice. Makes alot of funny noises in the pits and not much fun to drive at 10 MPH but on the track it flys. I will make another video when I get the chance.

I wish the resolution on YouTube was better. The source Video is super clear.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

A/S motors can be expensive but road racing is very hard on engines. Much worse then the super short track left turn stuff. I have a great engine builder and we get super good life out of engines. The top A/S motors can be $15,000 plus but you do not need to spend anywhere near that to go racing.

The SCCA does a geat job and our National Championships are on Speed.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

Yea, i'd guess you're making loads of HP, but I was just curious how much cam it takes to spin 7200RPM in a choked 305. The heads probably tame the cam, hence I was curious.
By all means if you get more video give'r, that is one COOL race right there.
How long does an engine last? One season? Do you use forged pistons ? What kind of rods? (if you can disclose that, i'll understand if not). I'm just wondering if you use titanium rods or anything super exotic.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

The cam is in the 250 duration range at .050. The bottom end is all super good stuff. Custom built Callies crank, Manely forged rods, Custom forged light weight pistons with metric rings. Then engines lasts about one season without a rebuild. I have used the same rods, block and crank for 4 years. The pistons go two seasons.

If you are interested I will post updates from the Runoffs. The SCCA will have live timing for qualifying and the race.

Re: In Car Video Camaro Pushing Steeda Mustang

The SCCA is great, I've been following for 2 yrs. Almost anyone with a safe car can race, even on low budget. Everybody still hating on 305's.....? Thought not, even though this one is more exotic. Bp'ed 600 carb and 250 cam dur @ .50 Ha most 350 loving 3rdgeners wouldnt even consider this kinda car. More power to ya, sweet vid, keep up grass roots racing!

You ran a bigger solid flat before, willing to go back that route? Except on a tighter LSA? I'm about to try an ISKY Z-25, 240/240 on a 108LSA.
