Good Head porter in Colorado

I have some brodix bb-2xtra's that i need ported. i bought them as bare castings that way i could make them perfectly match my specific application. i have heard that they are good heads once they are ported. they have 365cc intake ports as cast.

Does anyone know of a good head porter near Denver CO? I am not looking to completely modify the ports, but rather clean up the casting and the valve guide bosses.

i also want to remove the Rocker arm stud boss that protrudes into all 8 intake runners.

i have also read that the exhaust ports are kinda weak in cast form, what does it take to really open up the exhaust port?

talk with Five7Kid about a local porter possibly? he's in (or around) Denver i believe.

Re: Good Head porter in Colorado

I use Dave Sarno @ SCH racing heads(his business), his shop is close to bandimere speedway too...he's been doing heads longer than i've been alive(i'm 32), he is also a bonneville speed record holder with his '85 camaro, he has an in house flow bench and he is as good as they come in the cylinder head business. PM me for his contact if you want.

I've basically done my own clean-up work. Never had my stuff on a flow bench. I have a guy who does my machine work (shaving, valve cutting) and assembly, but his philosophy probably wouldn't be what you're looking for.

You might try getting a hold of Craig at AMS Automotive Machine in Fort Collins. He builds some great stuff. If he doesn't want to do the work for you, I'm sure he'd send you to a good shop.

Its not local but Id recommend sending them to Tony Mamo
He can get some incredible numbers from about any head without making them god awful huge. VERY impressed with the job he did on mine years ago.
One of the top porters out there imo.

Lots of local guys here in colorado that do a good job, head porting is not building a NASA space shuttle....no need to pay shipping to and from wherever "Tony Mamo" is, and you'll probably pay out the *** for the same port job you CAN get locally....Tony Mamo is tied to AFR, so he must be god right?

are you a damn fool or what?? How did what i said above depict that response from you? So let me guess, Tony Mamo is the only guy in the country that does a stellar job on cylinder heads? you're like the guys that say only LSx motors make power

Re: Good Head porter in Colorado

Your smart azz post got one right back from me

I dont care who does them was just offering a suggestion for someone who is better than most. Everyone with a grinder out there claims they are a porter and will take your money.
Nice new set of heads there, someone who really knows the latest heads well will know how to get the most out of them is all Im saying. Some need more/less work in certain areas and without a bench they wont know what they just did.

Sure theres plenty of good work out that way just offering a suggestion

you're like the guys that say only LSx motors make power
Uh, no- but yes the lsx will run harder than a Gen 1 with the same size cam head ci etc just the way new tech works

you know, i'm really trying not to be one of those guys, but i'll be damned if these motors don't do something to your head. they go so fast with so little! obviously people have been going fast before they came out, but if you want a 10 second ride and drive it on the street, and not kill the bank, these are the platform to look at.

my ported LT1 heads now measure 200cc on the intake ports. stock 241 heads are 200cc and get bigger with porting. stock 243 heads start out at 210cc and get bigger with porting. my 350 would make somewhere around 480rwhp with a t56/10 bolt/street tires with a 23x/24x cam.

the angle of the heads do help, though.

Re: Good Head porter in Colorado

I would side with leeperryracing, I was going to check out SCH to clean up my afr's. But I had F&M Performance & Machine in wheat ridge clean them up for a real respectable price, and I am happy with the work they did.

Re: Good Head porter in Colorado

i would send them to brian tooley at t.e.a. to have them cnc ported. i no longer bother with having heads cleaned up or mildly ported. i especially dont trust the local guys to go in there and hog them out so they will make less power than a stock set of heads. same goes for "budget cnc heads"

on my LS1 car-
patriot stage II cnc ported heads, 230/236 cam, dual 3" exhaust = 376rwhp
STOCK 243 heads, 233/239 cam, STOCK ss exhaust = 392rwhp thru 12 bolt and too lean.

Didn't you tell me he did your Dart heads and charge you $2000 and they still couldn't out perform his AFRs from the factory? Do I have that story right? IDK why you were so happy with those results.

One of the best guys in the country is Curtis Boggs. The nice thing about Curtis is he has CNC profiles for almost any head and he's not terribly expensive for what you get.

But not near Colorado.

Chad Spier is a little closer in Kansas, only 1/2 way across the country.

Re: Good Head porter in Colorado

I'm not trying to start an LSx vs Gen 1 debate here by what i said in one of my posts lol. No doubt the LSx motors are a superior platform, mostly attributed to the head design among other querks. I wasn't at all trying to take a swing at ANY LSx swapped thirdgens or in any vehicle for that matter. There's also that small group of narrow-minded people(ls1tech.com lol!!) that thinks no other motor in the world is any good lol.

In my mind there is still something to be said for hand crafting a head over a CNC jobby.

first thing to remember is, time is money.

cnc jobby- someone has taken the time to perfect a port/chamber on a certain head type, and copied it into a cnc program. once that is completed it can be popped out like clockwork. all ports/chambers are nearly perfect. all heads like those he does in the future just need to be tossed into the cnc machine for equal results.

hand crafted- someone is either doing a great job on the heads and making very little on the job, or they are rushing through doing a sub-par or "ok" job on the heads and making a decent amount. chances are, the ports/chambers from cylinder to cylinder will not be exactly the same as well.

I wasn't talking about doing the work for him. I was saying I haven't had anything like the heads or engine he's working with, so I wouldn't have a solid recommendation where to take them.

Figure was about right (may have included angle milling to cant remember-long time ago) but how they perform they kickbutt strong numbers everywhere without going big. Understand these are 10 yr old castings. They keep up with a 195 comp easy. Could they flow more sure but its a 350 dont want to start getting too big cc wise to get some pie in the sky peak #.

CNCing is the way to go but many peoples needs are different theres still a place for someone who does it well by hand. An artform for sure.
