how fast are 3rd gens w/ zz4 motors?
exactly that.. how fast are they? not really looking for times, more interested in mph. I just sold my 74, and am really a thirdgen fan, but now im debating between an LS1 and a really modded 3rd gen. the price would be slightly lower for the 3rd gen, but ls1's are incredibly fast.. yadda yadda alot of stuff is really nice about them. anyways, anyone know?

With stock manifolds you're looking at high-13's at 100-101 MPH. With headers they drop to mid-13's @ 103-105 MPH. Its about comparable to a stock LS1, maybe a bit slower. Change the heads to something better and you'll be knocking on 12's.

yea, i was thinking of a zz4 shortblock and afr heads.. you know the rest. i just wanted to use the zz4 motor as a baseline. i think thats a good shortblock to start with. the last two cars i've had (83 Z-28, the nightmare from hell, and the 74 i just sold) i've had this idea about.. i get a car thats decent and build it up how i want it. the problem is i run into many many problems i just couldnt have predicted having. i swore to myself the next car i got would already be in good shape, i didnt want to have to fix someone else's problem. i dunno, i have a few months before im going to buy one, so im kind of tossing ideas around. i know if i wind up going with another 3rd gen, im going to stay with fuel injection, no carbs at all. my end goal is to be able to run around 112-115 in the 1/4, ls1's stock run around 105, and with minor mods can run what i want. i guess my delimma is 1) i NEED a reliable car since im in college and commute nearly every day, and 2)the thought of having another 'project' just makes me quiver in fear not that i dont want to work on the car or am not mechanically able to.. its just something i really cant do right now. thanks for the input

If your concerned about having to work on it then just get a 4thgen LS1. The 3rd gens will always be the best looking but that engine is a alluminum orgasim!!!

My 86 IROC does high 12's at around 107-110MPH. It has a ZZ4. Here is my web page:

It all depends how close to the 355hp rating of the engine that you get. It is rated at 355hp, which theoretically can run 109mph in a 3550lb car. But - if your induction, exhuast and tuning is off, you may run as slow as 98mph (10mph drop), as proven by quite a few half-*** attempts witnessed at Englishtown over the years. That would probably include stock exhaust, stock TPI intakes, 2.73 gears... If I was going to spend the $3400 for the ZZ4, I would want to spend the extra $1500 or so to make it run like it should (for the extra parts).
Now, just say you throw down the $5k for the ZZ4 and it runs 109mph in your ride at 355hp. If you replace the heads with AFR 190s, it should add about 30hp alone with no other changes - up to 112mph. If you upgrade the cam and tune it perfect, it could go 115mph, possibly a few more. Damn good for a 350 that doesn't have to rev past 6000rpm and is streetable. You could also go even more radical with the cam and heads (like a ported AFR 195) and run 120mph easy, but the big gears and converter make it less fun everyday. Doing the same combos with a carb is almost as easy, except the mileage will drop a lot (around town).
Don't forget that an LS1 is close to $30k new and can't run 115mph stock. They also handle like poop and cost a lot more for the same parts.

Traction is a limiting factor on a ZZ4 TPI car. With pretty substantial torque et's will be limited by street radials.Im running 295/50/15 radials with 3:73 rear and a 2500 converter.Suspension is SSM liftbars.Car just blisters these tires ,dont WOT it till about 30 ft out.ETs are 13.70's to 13.80's on 2.16 to 2.2 60 fts with MPH of 101-102.7.It goes through the lights at approx 5100 rpm.Tires would probly drop it into 13.40's.

My car runs consistent 13.20s at 103mph. I was pulling 1.8 60' times so traction wasnt a problem but a lack of tuning and 80+ deg. temps helped keep the mph down.
