Why are my 60fts so slow for my trap speed?

TBI LO3 automatic. I've tried using a pair of 255/60/15 bfg t/a's, and I still cannot get a decent 60 ft time. Stock cam and convertor. I hold it at 1200rpm at the lights, and I spin alot, but any less gas and it doesnt make power. My best was a 2.4 60ft, and a 15.7@87mph. Some stock guys claim to get a sub-2.0 60ft, why can't I? Thanks for any advice you can give me- Randy

Foot-braking the engine at the line sometimes doesn't help launches. In fact, Precision Industries (makes the Vigilante converter) recommends raising the engine speed just enough to take up the slack in the drivetrain and letting the converter flash up to the stall speed on its own. They said that this will actually net a higher stall speed since the converter is winding up faster by starting with a lower starting point, plus you'll be putting less heat into the tranny while at the line.

For better 60-foot times, you'll either need more torque, better tires, and/or a higher-stall converter. With my torquey 305TPI engine, 255/50/16 Comp T/A ZR's, and a 2.73-geared posi, I was able to pull 2.0x and 2.1x 60-foot times all day long. With headers, a 2400-stall converter, 3.42 gears, and the same tires that were nearly bald, I was in the high 1.9x range occassionally with almost no wheelspin, with the rest in the low to mid 2.0x range. Now with my 355, same converter and gears, and 275/50/15 Drag Radials, I'm in the 1.8x range (with too much tire pressure) when the track surface is good.

Thanks alot for that info. I just put in a stock rated convertor, because I was told that with my setup I wouldn't notice a difference with a higher one. I've been meaning to try hold the rpm just above idle like you said, but something happens to me when I go to the track, and I just want to gas it ALL THE TIME! But I will certainly try to control myself next time. Thanks again- Randy
