Building blower motor?
Okay ive been lookin at this 383 short block and the company saide they can work with me to build the motor how i want it. im goin to go with a roots style blower on this motor. heres the short block i also want to go with a roller cam on this motor, prefurably a comp cams or lunati. im not too sure what kinda heads i would get yet but the company carrys Air Flow Reserch heads and said they could make/get a set fo what ever i want to go with.
now for the blower, i was lookin in jegs at the Weiand superchargers and pricin things out. i was lookin at the 174 single carbed blower and also lookin at the 6/71 blower they got.
the 174 kit costs $2359.99, the 6/71 costs $2289.99. the 174 produces a estimated 100 hp increse with very good street mannersunder normal driving , iswhat it says in jegs.
im thinkin of gettin the 6/71 well its about a $100 or so cheaper and will give me alot more power. i just dont know what size carbs to go with and with what brand.
the company making the motor said they can get the compression down to 8.5 or 9.0 to1 if i go with the blower which i more then likly will. and they can build the motor to what i want and from what they said the bottem end will hold i think he said 700hp. im tryin to build this motor to about 500-600 hp.
after the motor is built ill probably get my tranny rebuilt or get a th400 and have that built up and then see how long my rear end lasts.
i figure this big project will be done around Nov. or dec. of next yr enless things work out some how better.
But what do you guys have to say about this any help is needed thanx? also the car will be taken off the road by next yr and used for the drag stirp and car shows.

Re: Building blower motor?
Wow you must have cash to burn! I would ditch the whole Blower idea and just bump the compression to 10:1-11:1 compression and put in a decent 242dur @.050 roller cam with a set of AFR heads. Save some money and have a hell of a motor to boot!
To be a little more on topic, remember the 6-71 will require 2 carbs also. I have enough trouble trying to tune 1 n/a carb, I wouldnt dream of trying to tune 2 on a blown application!

its either goin to be a blower motor or a nitrous motor eventually. and with the blower id have power at all times but then withthe nitrous id have it when id want it but i wouldnt be using it much besides at the track. and i wont be using the car for street racing either.
i dont have any problems yet "tuning" a carb, i have a edelbrock 600 cfm and so far thats not that hard to tune or play around with.
and i dont have money to burn yet thats why i said this project wont be done till next yr sometime well the motor should be done around like spring time enless things work out better for me some how.

yeah man why go with a blower when you could build a 500+ hp 383 no problem and then you can claim all motor. Whats a nitride crank is that better or worse then forged?

Nitridating is a chemical process that stregnthens the metal.

I have a 383 stroker with 11.5:1 compression. I am thinking about dropping the CR and puting a 6-71 blower on it. The motor has to be taken out b/c I have no oil pressure and its a lifetime labor warrantee so I can take advantage of this and get the 8:1 pistons put in cheap.
What else do I need to change? Cam? See sig

IM JUST TAKIN A STAB BUT I DONT THINK THAT A 10 BOLT ISNT GOING TO LAST LONG
Get a 12 bolt or a ford 9''
also 2 carbs really suck to tune unless you have them jetted for driving in the same weather every year it not the most fun thing to tune.
if you got gobs of cash to trough around spend some extra attentoin to the rest of the car.You dont want to throw slicks on the car and come back down the return road with one back wheel higher that the other.
one thing for sure that rearend gots ta go.Good choice on the blower if you dont mind tuning it you can get monster power for little coin
what kinda heads prolly something with 70cc combustion chambers 12cc thick gasket would help drop that compression ration down too
dont got a calcalator in hand but thats my wild guess
if your looking for gm heads look for the 74cc "smog" heads great for low compression motors. Forgot the casting # on thoughs heads go with forged blower piston for sure and make sur if you running more than 12 lbs it a 4 bolt block. if not get splayed main caps.
Most shop will do splayed caps for $500 for the caps and machine work. Then you need to get it aline bored and honed. I got mine done for nearlly half that price but $500 is what i think he said was the average
