Trouble with supercharged 334TBI w/in
I was at the drag strip Saturday night. I was with some friends and my buddy Bill had just finished up his powerhouse 334 stroker with a kit from Powerhouse (its worth 150hp BTW). He put a vortech supercharger on it. One of those nice ones from Vortech with the box and everything. It has 8 rib pullies. He ditched the factory 3rd gen pulley system. (this is an 89 RS BTW)
Well he started it and it ran fine. Got into the staging lanes and he did a burnout and staged. He launched and the car didnt want to run right. When he gunned it, it would load up and pop through the exhaust. It was terrible. No matter what we did, what fuel we adjusted, timing. Nothing helped.
Oh yeah, I guess I should mention that my friend Bill brought a 24 pack of PBR and we were passing around a joint before he got to the staging lanes.

lol..... M ok really... so no matter what you did with the timing it was backfiring thru the exh..
what plugs? what gap, etc? loading up and bfing sounds like he might be blowing out the spark monetarily. to big a gap? did ya check the plugs to see if he was dumping to much fuel?

Hey man you ran over my dice in the staging lanes.. Can't shoot craps anywhere anymore. You owe me a bumper of Malt Liquor!
As for the tech part.. The 334 Powerhouse obviously needs to be "de-tuned" All that power on your fuel system is running way lean.. The Weldon is just not up to par.

No way guys you have it all wrong..You should try what I do..I bought the Simpson fresh air helmet... Hooked that up to my bong..That way I can get high all the way down the track and dont have to worry about keeping the philly blunt in my mouth while driving... As for the PBR Im working on one of those beer holders for the side ofmy helmet as well...
Man it trips you out...just try it...drink a couple of 40's light up the bong and tune the speed pro all at once....
BTW how do you repair a cracked block....

Well that settles it...Ill use both....Im gonna try to plug up the hole with one of these pink elephants that are running around my garage..I plug it with that and JB weld and then seal it up with duct tape...

It obviously a problem with your fuel pump. Lift up your back carpet and cut out a big freaking hole behind your seats to get at it. That'll fix it!

I always found it funny how the beer of choice varies so much depending on what is close up north (I grew up in Buffalo…). Get south of PA or so and it seems to vary more on the crowd doing the drinking rather then the local favorite.
WRT to the tech… I’m assuming that you’ve got the fuel right and are at least raising the fuel pressure with a second regulator/fmu or have reprogrammed for it. If so, then the popping out the exhaust sounds to me like you’re blowing your spark out under boost. Assuming we’re talking say 9psi or less, even a stock, good working HEI should work OK as long as you keep the plug gaps down, but you may have to go with gaps as small as around .024”. If there is a chance that you’re actually poping out the intake then you’re probably dealing with a really lean mixture or possibly a valve train problem.

9 psi? Hell we are talking 35psi.
It has a 255lph in tank pump and it is blowing black smoke out the tailpipes when it DOESNT pop.

I thnk he means 9PSI of boost, not fuel pressure.
Diconnect the blower and run it N/A first. See how it runs. It should run like a champ, albeit with a lot less power. You've then ruled out anything mechanical being wrong and you're down to just fuel and spark issues.
Also- did it run strong on the street and problems just cropped up at the track or did it run bad even before you got to the track?
My work here is done. Time to crack a 40.

Oh yea, Karps, this has no rear brakes attatched, the subframes and body have 'weight saving' holes in them, and Guido's been known to throw in a 'special' mix into the tank.

Well, I guess that if anyone is going to give an intelligent response we’re going to need some real details…
If you’re talking 35psi boost, well I don’t think that you’ll ever get it to work right with stock injectors and increasing fuel pressure. I also can’t imagine what TBI setup you’ll have that will deliver enough fuel or for that matter I doubt that a 255 would move enough fuel to feed it. If you’re talking 35psi fuel pressure, well, then you’re running enough fuel for something in the 15-20psi boost range.
At this point I think that everyone would be guessing without real details about what your dealing with. Sounds like you're running rich when it doesn't pop, but do you know if the fuel pressure is staying up and the injectors opening when it does?
