Cheap Turbo Install

I saw a monte carlo maybe, with a turbo charger. It had the flexible steel braided hose running from the [custom] y-pipe to the turbocharger, and then rigid piping to the intake. It was mounted where the AC would have been and fit pretty nice. How much would an install like that cost, how much turbo lag would there be, and what else would I need to do to my car to turbocharge it?

Is your car Fuel injected? If it is then you should be ok until WOT. You'll have to crank up the fuel pressure or you'll torch the engine. Mallory makes a return style regulator that is also effected by boost. You'll also need an ignition boost retard, and high pressure oil feed to the turbo and drain to the pan. You'll have to find somewhere else to run the engine harness because the crossover pipe is going to take up that room. Switch the exhaust manifolds from one side to the other and upside down. That should help with the routing. I wouldn't use flex hose for the exhaust side just because of all the pressure. If it doesn't leak then it's all good. The flanges to bolt the turbo to the Y pipe will be the hardest part, but a good exhaust shop should be able to handle it. They should also be able to make a Y pipe and down pipe. It's just going to end up costing some mucho bucks. I'd expect it to lag up to 3000, and come on like a mother. Of course it all depends on the turbo size and trim for lag times. This sounds like a real good idea, like something that if a template were made could be manufactured. Let me know how it turns out if you do it.

Its TBI, so yes its fuel injected :P

I wanna hear from other people who have done this, but it seems people don't answer questions here. The Power Adder board has always been a bunch of mean people. They think they're SO cool with their turbochargers and NOS! damn you! hehe im playin around. But seriously i want some help

Unless you buy a Paxton or Vortech or Whipple supercharger kit, it's going to be a pain, and I've only heard of one person on this site that has made his own custom turbo install. Setting up the hardware is going to be relatively simple if you have a pipe bender and a welder. Then it's just a matter of what intercooler will fit (if you use one), and how you're going to route everything. Getting the electronics to keep up is going to be the problem. You'll definately need bigger injector(s). You'll also need to find out what the fueling logic is for part and wide open throttle. That will help you to fool it into thinking that nothing's wrong. I don't know anything about GM fueling and spark strategy, so I can't help you there. You might try the TPI and electronics boards for that much, or find out how the blower guys do it.

The AN looking stuff is probably heat barrier material.
If you were to look at a Syclone real close there is all the info you need. www.syty.org is their site, I think.
Heck even just use a 4.3. Well tuned a Sy will run 12s. and that AWD takes some ponies to turn over.
Course there is the option of just doing a 89 TTA.
You don't need a v8 when you start mentioning Turbos.
