I think you should see a steady fluctuating change in the guage if there is an intake leak. AKA the needle should jump around between two marks.

I've never had a problem changing the plugs. Get a deep offset 5/8" wrench. Its not expensive and makes the job easier.

Where did your heads come from? The ~.450 number is for the stock heads with the stock seals that were used in production. Could be you've got some different seals.
