I believe the battery is built into the NVSRAM chip and once depleted, the whole chip needs to be replaced. That is how the NVSRAM chip works, it has it's own battery backup.

According to the diagrams at Austinthirdgen, it is a white wire and goes through the firewall at the C100 connector at terminal D6 (as stated above by Qwk trip).

I would trust Rbob and Tuned on this, Code 53 for TBI is probably VATS. I assumed that the codes for TPI and TBI would be the same but I guess not! You know what they say about assuming things, LOL!

If you are referring to the complete system then yes, go for an 86 or newer setup. The ECM for the 85 system has a stand alone MAF controller and there is not much, if any, support for the 870 ECMs....
