I'd say check under the distributer cap again. Pull out the ignition module and see if there's moisture under it.

I had a 1980 Firebird that did the exact same thing. Got some heavy rain, it fired...

Definitely get the 5 speed. It'll be slower but not by much. The real thing is that it will be so much more fun than an auto. A v8 backed by a 5 speed is probably the most fun you can have in a car. ...
