Should I get auto 350 z28 or a 5 speed 305 z28

Well there are a bunch of import drivers at my school but three guys especially and they all drive 240sx's. They are always boasting about how there cars are so awesome and how they are so fast with 5 speeds. They are always bagging on my car (1991 firebird v6) and telling me how american cars suck so bad. They all have the fart cans and wings but there saving grace is there all 5 speeds. I would be talking crap but everyday they always pass me on the free way going like 80. They think I just dont want to race but I do but my car is just gutless. So my question is should i get a 5 speed or 350 auto. I want to be able to beat them by at least a car length. I really want a 5 speed but i know it will be slower but by how much will i still win? also all theyre cars are stock with a lot of miles.
Most kids at my school think autos are gay and i hear theyre more fun

5.7l 350s noticeably faster? I really want a 5 speed though what would be more expensive to switch the engine to a 350 or to change it to a 5speed

IMO get the 5-spd car and swap a 350 into it.

Easier BY FAR than changing the transmission type. (not that changing the trans is "hard"; just, the other is eeeeeezier)

In stock form, your not going to win any races with either configuration against any real cars. Might as well get the 5 speed because it's just so much more awesome to drive. Buy a car to satisfy yourself, not for any other reason.

first off.. I really can't stop laughing at these insecure punks.. yeah, I'm old and I'm calling them out.. the truth is, they are just as insecure and dealing with identity and peer pressure.. this is what high school is about.. learning that years later, your judgment of others and perspective is less than objective.. it reminds me of the movie The breakfast club.. it's a cycle.. don't worry about anyone who sneers at you and your car.. and if you want to beat them with little modification, throw am NOS kit on them and smoke their asses... if you do go this route, make sure you ask around that everything will hold up.. not sure how strong the v6's are and everything else that goes with it..

when it comes to what you want... don't get a stick just because they think it's COOL.. if you really want one to enjoy it, then go for it.. it's not going to make your car faster anyways..

also, fart cans and wings DON'T make a car fast.. just because they passed you on the hwy going 80 doesn't make their car fast.. the crappiest car in the world can do 80.. in fact, maybe they can't go faster..

and when it comes to american being crap etc.. the bottom line is, it's just an opinion.. everyone has their allegiances and brand loyalty.. this is no different.. you could say the same thing back to them.. and that would prove the exact same thing they said.. NOTHING! it's a frickin opinion.. even though if they provoked me enough and were of age, they might get a lesson about their silly perspective.. and believe me when I say this.. we have all been there!!

bottom line.. screw them, get something you will really enjoy and possibly put a beat down on them.. in the end, it doesn't matter other than the beauty of the open road on a crisp evening with the windows and top down (convert if you have one, or t-tops), the radio on and the sun bright fire of the evening sunset refracting off our shiny machines!! F YEAH!!! Just got back from a cruise with my wife. THIS IS LIVING!!

If you aren't into modifing either setup for more HP then try this combo. Plug n' Play:

1998-2002
LS1
T-56

Problem Solved

Otherwise I say 350 Auto. Megashifter and stall on mine are fun as hell. Gear swap and call it a day. 350 will be better from a dig too! Nitrous is cheap.

Just wondering. Do any of these guys look like this?

Re: Should I get auto 350 z28 or a 5 speed 305 z28

Definitely get the 5 speed. It'll be slower but not by much. The real thing is that it will be so much more fun than an auto. A v8 backed by a 5 speed is probably the most fun you can have in a car.

And you'll be really surprised at how slow most imports really are. They put the big wings and fart cans and cold air intakes on them, but most of them still can't even run much lower than a 15 second 1/4 mile. I used to overestimate ricers. I had a 76 Trans Am that would run high 13's to low 14's, and these ricers up the street would always start crap with their primer Civics and loud fart cans. And I would think, man, maybe they are fast, and wouldn't I look like a huge *** if they did beat me in a race! Well needless to say I wasn't even out of 1st gear and already had about 5 car lengths on them.

That little 305 would probably eat those 240's alive with just some headers, intake and carb.

Re: Should I get auto 350 z28 or a 5 speed 305 z28

Seen plenty of 240sx in the 12 second range, although these guys are probably not. Also been spanked by a 10 second 1990 civic. Seen 9 second geo metros and helped a friend build his metro to a low 13s car. Not sure why people start bashing others all the time because it is not their thing. Let them do what they want.

Imports just like any car can be made fast it just depends on what you want to do with your wallet. Thirdgens have V8 autos that run 17s that is a joke sorry guys. Yes they can be made fast but in stock trim they are as slow as any econo box.

To be honest I use to beat up on V6 camaros in my accord, it was fun although neither car was particularly fast. My friend and I raced daily 1992 Camaro Auto V6 vs 1988 Accord EFI 5 speed. We just had fun with it.

For now and forever just ignore them. Do what you want with your car. My suggestion would be get a 5 speed car with a good body cheap then pick up a nice 1996-2000ish 350 vortec motor, rebuild it then drop it in.
