The EGR isn't a bad thought, but they "usually" yield a bad idle and then
it becomes less pronounced with greater engine speed.

He's saying it idles nice and smooth and runs fine but just won't...

I just leafed through the 1990 Pontiac service manual and found that
the 3.1 has a knock sensor and ESC circuit.

If this setup detects detonation OR the knock sensor fails, the ECM
retards the...

"usually" a bad one will throw codes, but I have seen where they are messed up enough to not even report failure. If you have a spare, I think I would try it.

And yea, I know they can be hard to...

When I tackle "runs but no power" issues it usually ends up
one of two things.

Spark control isn't right.

or

Air Leak into engine.

Spark control goes to the module and ECM.

Well folks, I just solved a weird one...

1990 Firebird, 3.1L, auto trans.

Engine would quit sometimes for just a
split second, other times I'd be coasting.

It seemed to do this alot...

That ECM (ECC) should be available from an auto parts store.

I just recently purchased a reman for my '90 bird. At OR
it was $70 after the core was returned.

Mine did (90 3.1) before I solved it's problems, now it doesn't.

Sounds like a small exhaust leak or a rich miss-filring cyl.

It's an older product designed for 1981-1992 GM ECMs.

Hose routings are on the sticker in the engine bay.

Sometimes the shop manual has them as well.

But absent those references, I "think" that one runs
around to the front to the cruise...

When the car is bulit w/o A/C the assessories are mounted
totally different.

Normally the A/C compressor should free-wheel if it's not
engaged. The parasitic drag and HP drain is very small....

The IAC/ECM sets the idle. It's a "learned" position.

If you've just done all of this, it (the ECM) may not have
learned it's correct position as yet.

I've had two cases like this...

My '86 5.0 TPI had 2 nearly dead injectors.

My '90 3.1 had a bad ECM, it tested ok and all sensor inputs
looked great - but it never would go into closed...
