I pulled the trigger and bought the CompCam XE262 and the full kit with it, springs, timing chain, retainers, seals, lifters, etc. The rep at Comp Cam said this is an easy install with no machining...

Sorry for the high jack, but I just spent time with Compcams and found that the XE-262-4 would be the best to go with. I have a standard tranny. It says some machining has to be done?????????

You are probably right. Will LT4 springs work on the 305 heads with a hotter cam? I have an extra set laying around.

Actually I bought a rebuilt 305 from AutoZone 7 years ago and swapped it out. So that would make them maybe 7 years old. But springs are cheap and I'll replace them. Thanks for the reply.
