Don't paint the wheels, and leave the crossfire intact. That motor is becoming rare and might be worth some $'s later.

I never had any issues with my '83 Cross-fire. Besides, when I replaced the original 305 all of the Cross-fire stuff went onto the new '88 iroc 305 motor and I ran that for many years, no problems.
