Re: 383 blew up today...
Oh man, that's ugly!
So the piston is in a million little pieces throughout the engine?
Do you think it might have dropped a valve first? Were you racing?
So what is plan B?

Plan B is using my old 357 to get her back on the road with the vortec heads and a LT4 hot cam or a ZZ4 cam, ither one, i hope to use the LT4 but i have to get some work dont i think for the heads to allow for the lift.

Yea, the conclusion is a dropped valve, pieces are EVERY where possible, i pulled the intake and was like WTF?

So what will the heads need for the LT4? I'm not real familiar with either cam. It is a spring issue? I just spent most of the day changing the springs on my car.

Re: 383 blew up today...
Well, the springs on my vortecs are good for a .490 lift, with the LT4 cam dawn from 525 lift with 1.6 rockers to 1.5s it is .492 lift, so i have to have the heads checked and see if they will work and see if they will even handle hydrolic roller, i had a 497 flat tappet on them before.

Re: 383 blew up today...
Was it you that was saying in a different thread that you do your own machine work? I think I remember reading that... If so... sweet, so you work for a machine shop or are just ridiculously rich & have that stuff in your garage for the fun of it? Anyway, I have a Vortec 350 I got off the guy renting a room from me... He claims to have "bent a rod" however the heck you do that with a stock long block in a carburated off road buggy.... Anyway I'd like to either see if that 350 is repairable cheaply or just put the heads on my 305... I can't afford to take it to a shop right now... But if you'd be interested in checking it out sometime let me know... I live on 1960 near 45... Maybe I can do something in return for you if you're up for it. Sorry if this is considered "stealing the thread" but I saw you talking about Vortecs & my fingers started typing away... :-)

Re: 383 blew up today...
ouch man.. dont worry about it.. $hit happens.. i blew my first 383 the second time at the track.. not even 2000 miles on the motor either.. threw 2 rods, bent 4 valves, twisted the crank and seized the other pistons to the rods.. it was a mess.. all i can say is, if it aint broke dont change it.. if it is, build it better..

That's a bummer alright. You mentioned using the ZZ4 cam next time around. If it helps any, I have a ZZ4 cam (used) I'd like to sell. -Bill

Re: 383 blew up today...
I feel your pain. I swallowed a valve in my 86 last year and punched a hole in the top of the #1 piston. S*&t happens. Found a 4-bolt 79 truck 350 block. Going to build a 383 for it as soon as I collect all the parts.

Re: 383 blew up today...
Thats a bad one...did you get lucky and not break the block? I know when I blew mine up, I broke a rod, and took out the block, tweaked the crank, bent 2 valves, took out my cam, took out 2 pistons, not to mention the oil pan, pump, and a couple of solid roller lifters. Hope you get yours going again soon...

Well, the head is junk, the block is not reccomended to sleeve for my application of power. What a loss, oh well.

Re: OUCH
Sorry to hear that Zane. I still have the ported fast burns that were on my car. Also have the Super Victor and RPM port matched as well. Have all hardware including springs for Hyd rolller and solid roller. They would still be on there if I had re-torqued the heads. Head gasket was good, some head bolts lost torque. Call me if your interested. I will likely post these heads for sale when I can get my pics in order. 281-389-6150 Dave

Re: 383 blew up today...
I ported them myself. This is not the first set I've done. I started out doing the iron Pontiac heads which are very similar to the SBC's. I have picked up the Pontiacs 80cfm with stock valve size! I have my heads flowed several times during the process at local machine shop with 28" bench.
