Found this in my tire!!!

This is a new one to me. Ive seen all sorts of debris cause blowouts but this one baffles me.
I was riding along then heard my rear driver side tire pop and lose air. It sounded like the tire just exploded. After pulling over I see this chunk of metal poking out. I pulled on it but it wouldnt budge.

Then at the shop, they tell me, they never seen this either. This is what they found inside the tire:

It turns out it was a worn disc brake pad.

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

Thats impressive, looks like a brake shoe. I pulled part of a grill grate out of a tire once, over a foot long, and was still able to plug and patch it. Funny how a tire can pick things up going down the road isn't it?

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

One day some how I picked up a piece of a broken coil spring. Thing jingled all day till it fell out and rolled down the street.

Bad deal on the road junk. Glad you didn't crash her up.

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

About a thousand years ago when I was 18 and living on near minimum wage, I got a screw in the front tire on my beat up Baja bug. Pulled out the screw, put some RTV on it and ran it back in.

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

I actually had the same thing happen to one of my drivers at work. I though he was lying to me until I saw it, lol. Makes you wonder how all these cars can make it down the road if they cant even keep the brake pads on them

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

I went over to my moms house a few years back to help her out and do a brake pad swap. Her caliper was missing a pad as well. I am like how the eff does this happen. My mom not being a car person at all was just like; "I dont know, it was just grinding a lot last few days"
, the pistons of the caliper were boring into the rotor.

Well, I had the RTV on hand. Let's see, in 1987 when this was, I could have spent three bucks on tire plugs, or gotten FIFTEEN packs of Ramen noodles, and eat for a few days!!!

When I got paid, down to the used tire shop I went and got some ten dollar treads thrown on 'er. Things have improved since!

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

I have had a few customer vehicles come in before with half a rotor. They ran metal to metal for so long it turned the rotor on the inside until it got to thin and cracked. Then they still drove it and wiped out all the vents in between the two services. That's a bad day lol The inside pad was gone and the caliper piston over extended and was missing.

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

A friend of mine is a building contractor. He does zero maintenance to his vehicles. His belief is that when it quits you fix it. Last fall his work truck with over 300K miles on it broke a rear rotor, and pieces of the rotor jambed the rear wheel so that it would not roll. He placed the truck in 4x4, drove it another hundred feet to get it off the road and into his driveway, making a flat spot in the tire and ruining it. The stress of dragging a locked wheel blew out the automatic transmission. When the truck stopped it was sitting in a soft patch of ground and the front end sank up to the frame in the mud. He also had a utility trailer full of tools attached to the truck. He had his wife sit in the cab, and used his track-hoe to push the truck and trailer backwards from hole. Once the truck began to roll backwards, the broken brake parts fell out and the truck rolled freely. Since the truck had no brakes at this point, because the caliper pistons had blown out also, it rolled down the mountain out of contol with his wife at the wheel. It jackknifed caving in the whole right side of the truck and front of the trailer, however it stopped before it went over the side of the mountain. They turned in the whole thing in on the insurance, and thier insurance paid for all of the damage except for the failed/worn out brakes. New transmission $5700.00, body work $4800.00, tire $250.00, damage to the trailer, $2300.00. Surviving the whole episode despite Darwin's theory; Priceless... And no, they were not drunk.

Some time back the local kids in the trailer park put nails through roofing shingles and set them out in the street.Their goal was to flatten all the tires of the junkies and dealers coming into the park,While I'm sure they flattened a few tires of unwanted wrongdoers, unfortunately it had an undesired effect on the locals, myself included.I went to help my buddy swap a rear and ended up with two flats on the way in.I was coming into the park and noticed nothing, however when I was walking to my car to leave I noticed a shingle stuck to my tire.I pulled it off but that was a mistake, instant flat. Also had punctures to the right rear.

To the OP, I once had thought I had a flat only to find my lug nuts were loose on the right front

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

Speaking loose lug nuts, never put brake squeak stop gel on your lug nuts and bolts. I kept having mine loosen up recently.

Re: Found this in my tire!!!

wow! thats a crazy picture, priceless. glad your o.k.

many moons ago i was driving a 78 camaro. i went to hit the brakes and a front rotor cracked, made a terrible noise. i jacked the car up on the side of the road and was about to start walking to get a new rotor when i noticed a similar car for sale in a guys front yard. he said a tow truck was on the way to scrap it. i gave him $10.oo for one of his rotors, which looked pretty new too. cant get much luckier then that.
