Had the TA for almost 2 months..
time for change. took it up to drknow's up in wittman, who was kind and kick *** enough to let me camp out and sand her down.
the paint was horrid when i got it. the first pics are how i got it. all i did wash wash it a few times, try to wax it, and no results at all. it was actually worse when i got it. it litterally looked like a horrid primer job. i guess PO buffed it with a thick thick compound from what it looked like.
here's some pics of it. we think it was either a blue clear coat (at some point haha) or blue underneath. it had weird purple undertones. we also think the stock color was silver/grey.
but check out the pics, totally trippy. it reminded me of that sunblock that is purple when you put it on, and when you rub it in, it goes clear.
regardless, it had been painted several times. some spots more than others. the orange peel on the hood was like a basketball. none of the trim had been taken off for any of the painting, except maybe the hood louvers once.

PHANTOM STRIPE?!
just spent the last 2 hours at the car wash after the first coat, and wet sanding. used the aircraft stripper, with good results, but bad news... all those little cracks in the paint i was trying to sand out... they are actually little cracks in the bumper itself. no good!
but after i was done at the wash, it was looking pretty damn good for a first coat. i'll take pics after the next round of paintin n sandin.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
went to look at paint for the louvers today, and wanted to either do a nice dark copper/rust color, or a nice gold. all the gold looked too "bling bling" for my taste. and the rust color was not found. i'm actually thinking now to do a nice silver instead. about to strip the paint from the louvers. i had that one snap on me . but totally repairable.
what do you think? silver and black? i am also thinking for the t-tops... black on the lexan, silver on that outside trim piece, and maybe a silver firebird on the black? yes?

yeah i agree with the formnula-ish. if the bumper had the ground FX removeable, i would rock it like that for a bit.
tracked down that gta bumper in cave creek. it was posted early feb, sent an e mail. we'll see i suppose. and if not, it's getting rattle canned until i finish the fun stuff under the hood!
well, finish under the hood... for now

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
i just pulled up $373
pulled it up on maps, (off van buren in phx) and took me here (lkqcorp.com).
i was even thinking of using a low grit, nice and dry, and using the "string" effect to my advantage. its worth a shot. might save it for another year or two haha until it just eventually crumbles.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
did a quick hand buff in a few spots to compare.. i wanted a slight orange peel, and decided it would look spotty from far. looked good in day light, but i pulled up next to it last night, and wow! i wasnt too happy with it. spent most the day today getting it totally smooth with 600, and just touched up the low spots. and damn! its going on like glass now. kind of a b**** that i basically had to strip half the paint.
but i would have liked a lil orange peel, to avoid future swirl marks and such.
still have to find the right paint for the louvers. got that small one repaired pretty easilly.
and tomorrow, hit the low spots again, and sand the other half of the car with 600 (bought all the 600 at the local true hardware). oyevay!
but its looking like i might end up with a pretty good product... after i hit the bumper with some 120 grit haha.

crappy phone pic. after a wetsand with just 600 to get rid of all that matte crap. its flat in texture and color, but has a good shine already. hit the low spots, hopefully 1 more spraying session, and sanding with 1500 and then ready for a good buffing!

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
yeah, i always ended up with old fords. mine was one hell of a car. bought it for $400, didnt run, spend just a few days on the coolant system, and lastend me 3.5 years, 30,000 miles, a trip to minnesota and back. the only major repairs were getting a bolt tapped out of the manifold... $175 the first mechanic, and 9 months later, $260 from the next mechanic who had to fix the first hack job.
had a great 5.0 in it. could have lasted a lot longer, but i just decided it was time for a new project.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
i went with black because of dmv stuff, and dont want to have an inspection or deal with them at all. was going to do the trim in silver, but just finally found some stock gm gunmetal paint for the trim and louvers.
hey dr! i never came across anywhere that said how the side louvers come off from behind the front wheels. i reckon you probably have the solution.
gonna hit the touched up spots with 1000 grit tomorrow, then hit the rest with 1000, and HOPEFULLY lay on the last coat. lets hope i dont hit that crappy blue color during sanding.

thought it was an rs at first.
almost left a note asking if the louvers are for sale. i think they work at the danny's car wash right there. but yeah. maybe if i cross paths with it again...
what do you think of those chrome fender flares?? haha.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
Just finished with 2000 grit wetsand, and ready for the buffer! Hopefully the new buffer gets some work done, because I'm pretty darn tired of wetsanding. Its too hot out to continue painting, and already hit a few low corners and afraid to take down all the orange peel. You can't feel any bumps, but they are visible after it dried from wetsanding. Whatever my buffer does, it what its gonna look like until I get back home to all my tools and climate controled garage. Gonna do a different color too.
When I started this, I cut a few corners, with the only thought in my mind was "as long as it looks better than I got it". As I kept truckin, I got a little more patient. So my prepping was a bit 'winged', but the paint should be good. I'm still mad about how the last coat went on. It definitely held me back from my plan of barely wetsanding at all after the last coat. One way to tell now, buffer! Pics to come....on tuesday.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
i have been debating doing the eye shadow on the TA. i was actually considering it a few weeks ago, and came across a thread where someone with a firebird did it, and looked pretty good. i got a dark gunmetal for the louvers and those "hard to reach places". it came out lighter than the cap on the can. kinda wanted a good blend. but it should work.

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
here it is!
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
had a minor problem with the buffing... buffed with maguire compound, and it was lookin GOOD! then polished with maguire polish... then farted around for a bit, and before i left the garage i was using, i noticed i missed a lot of spots... so i hit all those, and ended up re-polishing it. i took off and by the time i got home, it looked like crap. so, i started hand buffing, and had a hot lady invite me for coffee, drove over there, and the spots i buffed by hand hadn't faded like before. just hand buffed the whole thing, and looks awesome. guess something is up with the polish or something. oh well, looked just as good with the compound. maybe hit her with wax in a few days and see.
the pic is from after a hand buff, so theres some scratches and stuff. i dont have very good access to garages with power outlets, but i plan on machine buffing (again), hopefully before the cruise!

Re: Had the TA for almost 2 months..
shoot. you dont want to know my price haha. took me 3 weeks (sanded down on the 15th) and over 100 hours of inspecting every square cm dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds of times.
but dont you worry, on saturday, i will be the first to point out every imperfection. have several low spots that i'm not happy with. most of it is in part to the heat wave that started thursday. was supposed to get the last coat on wednesday, but got pre-occupied (making whoopie) and didnt get around to it till thursday. it was ready to buff, had no low spots, but was shooting for absolute perfection, even though i already had it. the paint didnt like the heat, dried too quick leaving high spots (that had to become low spots to remove). but it's okay. she is a HELL of a lot better than before. hopefully i'll take night pics here soon. but for now, i am too tired to walk down the stairs.
when i started, i kinda knew it was a practice run. i knew that next summer when i get back home, i am likely to paint it a more conventional way. i didnt really want to paint her black, and knew that it wouldnt be black for very long.
