Convertible update... #3 in an endless series!

So after becoming frustrated and exhausting all of the possibilities I could think of as to why the 'vert was running like crap, I took it to Power Chevrolet in LB to see if they could figure it out. They are telling me that all signs point to the distributor. Hmm... sounds plausible. They also told me that since the distributor was a discontinued item (not that I would have bought one from GM anyway) that they would need to 'piece it together at a cost of approximately $711. Uhh... not. I'm wondering if it is the entire dist. assembly (like they are saying) or just the module. Any way to test just the module?

I think I'm just gonna spring for an MSD distributor or something comparable. Does anyone have any other suggestions or favorites? Keep in mind that this is a bone-stock 305 TPI which will eventually see mild performance upgrades (exhaust, runners, probable mild intake porting, possible cam, etc., but that's probably it). I'm not trying to build a 12 sec. 1/4 miler. Thanks for any help. -Jerry O.

Don,

I was thinking you probably had a good spare one lying around that we could hopefully confirm the problem with, but rather than me asking, I figured I'd let you bring it up.

We'll drop your spare dizzy fo' shizzy! I think I'm off on Friday... will you be around and have a few spare moments where we can swap it real quick? Oh yeah, and what kind of beer do you like?

Whatever you do, DON'T bring him Miller beer. He'll explain why he's boycotting that brand. Something about where they built the local brewery.

Jerry, I was at Speed Shop USA in La Habra today. I remember that he once stocked a billet distributor that was just as good as the one from MSD, but for a lot less money. I found out today it is made by Petronics (Petronix?). He doesn't stock them anymore. As fast as he gets them in, they are sold. He sells them for $225.00 or $250.00 ( I don't remember exactly). He said the price on MSD distributors is now $350.00.

Well, after yesterday's fiasco I'm down a total of $220 to Garbage Grove PD and Action Towing.

While on my way out to see Don on Friday afternoon, I come to an intersection in Garbage Grove and pull up on a cop I noticed was checking out my car hard in the rear-view (hmm... a mexican with dark sunglasses and a shaved head driving a nice camaro in Garden Grove... yeah, I'd pull myself over too ) and I figured he was probably noticing my non-existant front plate which, by the way, has never seen action in the 14 years the car has been on the road. He makes a u-turn and I figured he was coming back around for me as I proceeded through the intersection.

Sure enough, he came back and pulled me over. Once pulled over, he also noticed my tags were not current (although I have paid fees - I just need to smog it) so he called the tow truck and impounded my vehicle. When the tow truck arrives, he just slammed my car up on the flatbed, completely bending the spoiler under the front of the car and scratching it along the chains. At this point I about f**king lost it, and I will say that I came closer to landing myself in jail than I have in a long time (whoopsie!) when I almost punched the tow driver and came close to going off on the cop who, and I've been pulled over many times, was quite possibly the biggest jackass I've ever encountered wearing a badge. The scratches on the spoiler are small and there's only a couple. I'm not even sure it's worth my time (although I'm still a little hot about it) to do anything. I'll see how I feel about it come Monday.

Long story short, it pays to keep your registration current, GGPD are dicks, and I'm beginning to believe that there really is a black cloud hanging over my black car. That $220 would have gone a long way towards a new distributor. Oh, and by the way, Don, your 12er is still sitting in the passenger seat...

Russ, I think that's basically the same one that Summit sells as 'performance stock replaecment'. I'll have to check it out, as well as the Accel like Dean has, provided I don't push it off of a cliff between now and then.

By the time you get the car back, that beer will be long gone, and nobody will know what you are talking about...

Sorry to hear about your troubles... Good luck getting it resolved!

Oh, c'mon now, Kevin... I had my car back within 2 1/2 hours, the beer hasn't been touched (yet...), and I'm pretty much over the whole thing. Life is good.

Went to visit my Dad for his b-day this weekend, as I'm coming home from work today, Linda, my neighbor, comes up to me and says: " I need to talk to you about your car". I was thinking maybe I blocked her garage door or something, but she then tells me that someone apparently broke into it Friday night. Stole a few bucks in change from my ashtray, as well as the ashtray itself, and did a really nice custom slice job on my top and headliner... this car is f**king jinxed.
