SC3G April Meeting @ Bob’s Big Boy/Johnie’s Broiler Sunday April 3, 2011 2PM
Our April meeting will be held at:
Bob’s Big Boy Broiler
7447 Firestone Boulevard
Downey, CA 90241
(562) 928-2627
Map
Bob's Big Boy Broiler Website
Based on feedback we have received recently we are going to try having a bi-monthly meeting on a Sunday afternoon instead of Saturday evening to see how it goes. I have reserved both front parking lots from 2PM-5PM which equates to about 50 spaces for our 3rd gens. As always our meetings are open to all 3rd gen owners from all areas so please feel free to stop by and represent!
To RSVP or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me / greygoose@sc3g.org call/text 714-713-0768
For those of you that aren't familiar with this iconic location, here's a quick history...
Experience the days of hot rods, souped-up automobiles, big hairstyles, lazy days of cruising, and the birthplace of the original double deck hamburger. Bob's Big Boy Broiler, first known as Harvey's Broiler Restaurant, earned innovative fame for both groundbreaking "Googie" architecture and the now classic broilers.
Thousands of cruisers came from all over the United States to experience the taste and atmosphere of this legendary Downey restaurant started by Harvey and Millie Ortner in 1958. After nearly being obliterated by an illegal demolition, people from all over saved the legacy of Harvey's and found a new owner in Jim Louder. Rebuilt in 2008, according to architect Paul B. Clayton's original blueprints, Bob's Big Boy Broiler is picking up speed with Hot Rod and Custom Cruise Nights on Wednesday's and Saturday Night Cruises.
Bob's Big Boy Broiler not only continues the cruising history of this Downy Restaurant experience, they also have revived some of the best American traditions of burgers, shakes, and fries.

I'm in.
If Morgan gets his 2+2 there I might have to bring the GP instead of the vert.
Be neat to have the 2+2 and GP next to each other.

Awe yes, my old stomping grounds, where I grew up learning about Hot Rods.
Back then it was called Harvey's Broiler, spent many a nights cruising thru there.
That was when low riders would drive in, flop to the ground drag thru, raise back up, drive around and come back thru unless they got nailed by the Downey PD.
Many a race originated there and migrated to Orange County to have at it.
My favorite was the 480 cu.in. Pontiac powered '55 T-bird, I don't think he ever lost a race.

The sad part is that I must have ridden past that front line of Grand Nationals & GNX’s a hundred times without ever giving it a second thought. Had I known then what I know now not only would I have started robbing liquor stores much earlier, but I would have at least taken a picture. Now the only time you see that many Turbo Buicks in one place is at a car show! Oh well, all I have is the mental snapshot of that lineup and what I overheard a salesmen say to a guy looking at one while I was riding by… “Look son, this car is nothing like your daddy’s Buick!” LMFAO! Classic….

Re: SC3G April Meeting @ Bob’s Big Boy/Johnie’s Broiler Sunday April 3, 2011 2PM
We test drove a GN in Paso before we bought the GP. I had it floored up a on ramp and onto the fwy and it was slower than my old GP so we said thanks but no thanks.
During the sales pitch the salesman told us how a couple salesmen took it out the day before and looped it.
Years later I figured that the sales mgr probably had something disconnected so the power was down and nobody would wreck the car after his boys looped it. Dumb way to try and sell a race car

Great, nice pics of the Z28
I remember my first 'Black Regal' experience as though it were yesterday... I was sitting at the light on the 47 and 103 heading toward the Vincent Thomas Bridge a little after 3AM when this GN pulled up next to me. The windows were just as black as the paint and this car sounded a little different then other GN's I'd come across. Didn't matter because my TBI powered 88 Sport Coupe had a 40 series Flowmaster, K&N Filter, Hypertech 160 Thermostat and Headman headers and was the baddest thing since sliced bread! (idiot)
So I decided to pat the gas to let him know that it was on. He rolls his window down to display what can only be described as a massive Kool-Aid smile and asks me if I'm sure. I respond in the affirmative and he says ok but you go first. The light turns green and my 225/60-15's snap a dead hook (usually goes that way when your only working with 160HP) and I'm across the intersection with a Black Regal in my rear view mirror.
I think it was right about the time I went to pat my dash and say 'good girl' when I looked in the rear view to see the Black Regals headlights only they were at what appeared to be a 45* angle in tandem with the sound of a tornado rapidly approaching from behind. That son of a bitch passed me so freaking fast my car shook!
Once he put about a thousand feet on me he slowed down to about 15-20MPH and put his window down. He says 'Don't feel bad, that pretty much happens to everyone' gave me a thumbs up and disappeared over the bridge... I distinctly remember wanting to vomit immediately after that experience.
Is there a lesson to be learned? Absolutely, don't mess with old men in Black Regals that are out at 3AM trolling for punks in pony cars LOL!

Don't feel bad I had my butt handed to me by a old guy (looked like Santa) in a Syclone. I was in my old RX7 (fd) I thought well I have a turbo rotary, I'll take him, long story short my tires spun, and Santa was LONG gone along with my pride Well after that I sold that I sold it, DAM RX7 DAM Syclone!

Good to have you Rick
My sentiments exactly! Our cars are extremely unique as they are literally modern day classics. Having our collection of American Iron on display for everyone to enjoy is pretty cool. However factor in this iconic venue with such a robust Southern California Hot Rodding history and it immediately jumps to FREAKING AWESOME!!!

Based on RSVP’s and emails I’ve been receiving, this Sundays meet is going to make last Aprils meet look small in comparison. looks like it's going to be wall to wall 3rd gens.
As always, the SoCalTPI boys & girls are always welcome to come out and display some of that high horsepower TPI iron

Great, I've got club coming from the valley that is supposed to be about 10-12 3rd gens deep. I guess they were at the Plant meet back in July. They asked about bringing an ez-up and a club banner to display. I told him the ez-up was fine however no banners as this is an SC3G event and I am asking that the other clubs joining us to please respect that. Everyone is welcome to rock their club shirts, display business cards on their vehicles, and enjoy an afternoon filled 3rd gens as far as the eye can see
