brakes feel "spongey"
I just bought a 91 RS 305 TBI today for $1450, and the car is in awesome shape excluding the peeling metallic blue paint, but the one thing that bothers me is the brakes feel a bit "spongey" (best word to describe it) it is like you push the pedal down and it feels normal, but the car's stopping method feels spongey like not tight, would that just be the brake pads/shoes are old and need replacement? My dad said it seems like something else, but we're both confused and unfamiliar with it.

Congrats on the new car...make sure the girlfriend keeps her feet off the dash
First thing I'd do is replace the brake hoses, front calipers and pads, check the rotors and repack the bearings, flush the fluid, and check the rear drums for wear and binding. This shouldn't run you over $200 and could save your ***. Odds are if the brakes feel bad to you, they haven't been touched in a looonnnggg time and need an overhaul.
Good luck!

Definately agree with re doing the brake system. Over the summer I plan on doing the same thing, and we just got done doing ti to my fathers F-250. The whole process is relatively quick, and painless. And it will save you money and time in the long run. As for the problem, I have that same problem, but never got a chance to figure it out. The car's engine gave out and we have been rebuilding since the good weather arrived.

thanks! and thanks for the responses, very helpful, but i dont have a girlfriend to tell to keep her feet off the dash :
but anyway ive been driving it a bit today and everything seems to be loosening up and smoothing out (had been sitting for a few months before it went up for sale) it used to smoke a lot out of the tailpipe but that ceased now, i just changed the oil and its a lot smoother, still drives like its brand new which is good for a 123k mile car, I'll be doing major tune-up crap on it over the next few weeks as i also get my 88 RS ready to sell! thanks again
