i want to install a 4 or 6 pt roll bar into the 91z, i want it to be painted also, whats the best and easiest way to paint it? will i have to take the whole interior out do that? i would search but it doesnt work so....thats my question, thanks in advance!

If you have to paint it in the car, all I can say is get ALOT of masking tape and newspaper.

How would you paint the rollbar outside the car?


What kind of paint is good to use on something like that?

You could paint the bars up to a few inches either side of the weld point, that way when the cage is installed you only have to touch up the joints.

thats what i was originally going to do, but i thought there might be a way to do it inside the car, what about bolt in cages, if i welde one it, do they have the same durability? this is mainly for looks and for rigidness more than for drag and saftey, so would just like you guys' thoughts on those as well

weld in is much better. Especially in these cars where you have nothing solid to bolt to. Either tape the hell outta everything or paint all but about 6" out of the car and just cover the welds after its in.

just make sure you weld down some plates over wherever you intend on welding in to span the load.

I just went through this a few monthes ago. Oviously, if your welding in a cage then you are gonna take out your interior. You can leave behind the dash just get cardboard and block it off. Over spray is the least of your worries when doing a cage, its the welding that you should be concerned about. welding sparks like to leave a nice deep holes in cloth and plastic. Thats why I took everything out of my interior to do my cage. I blocked off the dash with big pieces of cardboard. I also painted my cage in the car after it was welded. I used a few cans of Krylon black paint. Just be sure to prime it first. I also used a LOT of clear especialy in the areas where there will be a lot of traffic i.e. the drivers and passenger door bars.

Oh and if you plan on welding it yourself, just make sure your welder is powerful enough to weld the bars the correct way. Welding the plates to the paper thin floor will take practice with the voltage and wire speed on the welder. Just aim the gun at the plate more then the floor.

ive done bars with a brush, in white. just do several thin coats, and it looks fine

My car wasnt an issue since i bought it completely gutted. I installed the 8 point, painted it, and put "some" of the interior back in . All i put back in was some of the dash and the front seats ( which will be switch out for kirkey seats eventually). I have a couple pictures of when i just finished the cage....i wasnt done painting it though.

- and to think, I stick welded my whole cage....I just got a TIG, but stick is all I've ever owned up til now.

Why do you have your rear bars going there? Doesn't seem like there is anything structural there?

I used spray on bed liner paint...that stuff doesn't chip, etc.
