Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

Hey

Simply put, i want a real smooth ride over bumps etc, Im going to swapping out a drum rearend for a stock disc rear, and i will be replacing the control arms, panhard bar, torque arm, and sway bar with all spohn products.....possibly even the springs.

Im looking for a set of rear shocks to make my very smooth over the bumbs and the like......what suggestions do you have.......I will be doing both front and rear.

thanks!

Nick

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

How smooth do you want it? I have KYB gas-a-just on the rears of all my vehicles and I swear by them. I don't think they're that bad on bumps. I suppose it depends on how fast ur going when you hit them with the KYB's.
----------
I forgot...I replaced all that stuff under my rear. The poly bushings in those lca's and panhard stiffened up the ride (corning and bumps) quite a bit

It also is dependant on what type of roads you drive on. My yellow Koni front struts are pretty stiff for the really rough potholed roads in my area. My rear's are Koni Reds and they need to be adjusted up a bit stiffer. The struts on my Infiniti G37 are perfect for the back roads, but on my local 101 freeway, with lot's of concrete ribbing bounce me along like a low powered jack-hammer. Nitro

If you aren't lowering the car, and want a nice ride with some cornering performance, I've heard good things about Bilsteins.

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

A Good Christmas Morning to you, Nick!

I checked your 'mods' list and it seems that you're really happy with enjoying the F-body for what it is. Probably the majority of us just can't leave a good thing alone and have to tinker. So based on that, don't be bullied into upgrading what you have no need for. Now I'll stick my neck out for the chopping block:

A basic quality ride shock that will work fine with your factory sports tuned suspension would be Monroe's Sensematics. They are disposable units that will hold up to 30k miles of around town, home to work driving. They do a good quality ride and non-hot rodding wheel planting.

If you like to play around a bit and add a bit more of 'show off' driving, Tokico basics are fine. I've used Tokico's for all my family use vehicles. They're easy on the lower back and your hands won't go numb on a long drive. The KYB's apparently are a home-run shock with heavier 3800lb vehicles.

Going upwards to Bilstiens, Koni's, etc, you are going to start trading off ride quality for a suspension that won't let you down when you're playing hard. They'll last you mostly forever and cost you $$$.

Remember; your car was already designed for scootin along so if the rest of your suspension is in good shape you most likely will be fine with quality replacement parts. For the rest of us; we need the $5000 in upgrades. Does that help? People are going to flame this; as you don't get respect with Monroe shox, hubcaps or white wall tyres :

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

I agree for the money the sensatracs are a good choice for a smooth ride.Adjustable will be the way to go if you want to firm things up for some corner carving and then have the ability to soften the ride a little.

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

The difference in the reds and yellows is the valving. I think I remember the Reds stiffest setting being just a little stiffer than the softest setting of the Yellows.
I don't flame anyone for having the Monroe Sensatracts. I had them on my car and they were, as you say, ok for basic daily driving. But, I've never seen the point of driving a sports car when it plays like an old Caddy.

From KONI's site:

A: The KONI Special (red) has been engineered to maximize
the ride comfort with good handling performance for each
vehicle application. The KONI Sport (yellow) typically
starts at a higher initial valving baseline to give a sportier
feel and work on vehicles with higher performance parts.
In some instances, KONI will only offer a Special or Sport
valving and not both. Some modern cars come from the
factory with higher tech suspension systems and
wheel/tire packages so they would move directly into the
Sport range, however they are still valved to give a
comfortable ride with very good handling capabilities.

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

It's a nice system and a cool set-up, but the extra weight and not knowing your spring rates keeps me from buying it. That, and I don't have the money for it lol.

Re: Anyone have a suggestion on a rear shock?

I think i am going to go with the red Koni shocks, not set in stone, but its going to be either those or the yellows, i just think i'll like the reds more.
