Should I back half my car?

Ive decided to strictly use my car at the strip. Im not sure on the engine combo yet, but ill probably use a powerglide since its an 1/8th mile track. I want to launch real hard. No bracket racing, just for fun. I know there are some fast torque arm cars, but im not trying to be different or prove anything. Do the benefits of having a four/pro link justify back halfing my car?

Re: Should I back half my car?

Engine is probably going to be a 406 with a whipple twin screw. That kind of torque might overwhelm a 3 link.

Re: Should I back half my car?

It's not a 3 link. It's a torque arm suspension. 2 different styles.

It's not that you're going to overpower the suspension as there are very fast cars running a torque arm suspension. The main purpose of a back half is to install larger tires to make sure the tires don't overpower the track.

If you're lucky enough to race on a track that has very good prep every time you get a track day then a small tire car can perform very well. If you race on whatever surface they provide including poorly prepped and slippery tracks then a big tire can have an advantage over smaller tires.

I've seen 10-13 second cars with back halves so it isn't a speed issue. You do it to make sure you can usually get good traction when small tire cars are struggling.

If you're going to attempt your own back half, find my thread on how I did mine. If you're going to pay someone to do it, expect to shell out around $10,000 to have it done. It's not an easy job for the average person. After doing it to my car, I really wouldn't want to do another even though I know how much more is involved now.

Re: Should I back half my car?

I guess if you dont consider the torque arm as an upper control arm its not a 3-link. I dont think i have much adjustability with the stock stuff. Right now i either have just a little anti-squat, negative, or way too much. Im not against trying it out, I just dont want to waste a bunch of time next year trying to make inadequate suspension work. I took a 3 month course on racing suspension and chassis modification so I know what work is involved. If you think I can make the stock style work, I'll try it.

Track prep up here is nothing great, and there arent any other tracks reasonably close.

Spend a lot of money on tubbing it. My 1.23 60fts aren't that good.

Re: Should I back half my car?

if you dont need extra suspension adjustments, dont add them. they will just add confusion and more potential problems.
a fully adjustable stock style setup can go low 1.2's with no wheelie bars on a little 275 radial at the right track. putting it on a 28" slick will make it much less finicky to track prep. most people will never even have enough power to go low 1.2's with a 4 link and 33" tires.

Re: Should I back half my car?

If you are going to travel and bracket race and the combo has has ample power the consistancy is worth the suspension change. If you have a track that hooks consistently then dont bother, use the money in other places that will help the car perform. If I was going to bracket race my car it would be tubbed because I want to make sure my car is consistent where ever I go. I feel the suspension change is dependant on the power out of the combo and ET you desire.
