Is there a difference?

I'm replacing all of the front brake hardware including the rotors, bearings, and seals. I run up to Napa and pick everything up based on what their computer specifies for my 91 z28. I get home and the outboard (smaller) bearings don't fit in the new rotors, they're too large to properly fit the already installed race. A Sunday trip up to Napa finds the "B" team behind the counter and with no dicernible results, I leave her my name and number and ask that they get to the bottom of it and call me back. Fast forward to today. Having just spoken to the "A" team at Napa, he tells me that GM put "RS" spindles on my car which is why the "Z28" bearings won't fit in the rotors. He goes on to tell me that GM would use parts from other models rather than shut the line down to wait on the correct part....having worked at an assembly plant, I completely understand.

However, I don't recall, and for that matter don't understand, why GM would spec two different spindles for a Z28 and an RS. Rotors, calipers, etc aren't different(excluding the 1LE), why would the spindles be? I think he's feeding me a line. Thoughts?

There are two spindles: standard and 1LE (the only difference there is that the 1LE spindle has its ears cut off to accommodate the larger brakes). IIRC, the inner bearing is the same for both, only the outer bearing is different with the 1LE being larger.

EDIT: The A6 inner bearing is common to both the standard rotor and the 1LE. The A3 outer bearing, which the 1LE uses, has a larger OD than the standard A34 bearing. If you had the larger bearing, you had the 1LE.

Re: Is there a difference?

So NAPA must have the 1LE specification for the outer bearing as a default listing. The smaller of the standard vs. 1LE will fit 99% of third gens, independent of model. Concur?
