My brakes stopped working.

I was driving home yesterday and I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting some idiot who decided to run a red light. After that the brakes felt really stiff and almost like I didn't have power brakes anymore, so I pulled into a parking lot and checked it out. I pumped the brakes and it wasn't leaking any fluid and I only had to go about a mile to get home so I just went for it. When I finally got to my driveway after doing mostly engine braking my brakes stopped working all together.

With the engine off I can pump the brakes and they go all the way to the floor, with almost no resistance. If I have someone pump the brakes I can hear a hissing sound from the base of the fluid reservoir. I'm thinking that is air getting into the lines and I should just replace the whole master cylinder and reservoir. Does that sound right? I am actually away from my car now on a business trip, so I want to order the parts while I'm away and they will hopefully be there when I get home.

Re: My brakes stopped working.

Fluid level good?

Hissing from the booster?
I see you're busy for awhile, can someone check for you, & while they're at it, check the vacuum line to the booster?

..

Re: My brakes stopped working.

Fluid level is fine, and it doesn't sound like its coming from the booster. With the car off the pedal goes all the way to the floor and with someone pumping it sounds like it is coming from the back of the fluid reservoir. Tell me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a vacuum leak only be an issue if the car is running?

I can have my brother take a look at it but he is only 16 and doesn't know much about cars.

Re: My brakes stopped working.

Did some reading.
Symptom of pedal to the floor, spongy pedal, no brakes-

Master cylinder issues.

Booster would be a hard pedal.
