grinding down steering shaft for header clearance...
how do you guys feel about this?
i REALLY don't want to dent the header, and i already tried to move the steering column last year without any success.
i am going to try again to move it (i tried real quickly and may have missed something). but if that doesnt work, i think the plan is to grind a LITTLE bit off the steering shaft.
i dont do any autocrossing or anything, so there isnt going to be a huge amount of torque on the shaft greater than it would be during normal driving.
also, the "power" part of the power steering is past the steering shaft, so most of the torque doesnt go through it anyways.
BUT...what do you guys think?

You would be better off denting the header. Use an acetelyne torch and heat up the header tube where you want to dent it cherry red. Just don't burn a hole in the tube. Use a hammer and tap the tube to the shape you need.
I had to redent my headers when I bought some new heads. Hooker already had a dent in the header tube to clear the steering shaft but the new heads moved the exhaust ports a little higher. The tube was rubbing on the shaft. I heated up the tube and used a hammer and punch to make the dent bigger. It doesn't touch the shaft now.

I loosened the the three bolts that hold the steering shaft in place on the inside of the car. Then I took a wonder bar and beat it with a hammer between the header and steering shaft. This gave me about an 1/8" clearance. This might not be a method for everyone but it worked for me.
