Ok, i recently noticed that K&N came out with an xtream air cleaner lid for all factory GM vehicles from 1968 to 1995 (summit # KNN-66-1201). I'am thinking about putting it on but want to know if you guys think it will even benefit my car..

Before you say just get an open element, i want to let you know that i ordered all the parts to get an open element alittle while back but i didnt like how you had to drill a hole for the IAT sensor, how you had to relocate the breather and all of that, and just how it looked out of place in my engine bay.

So i figure, the stock intake is already sucking as much air as it can possibly hold through that tiny *** tube, and that even with my air filter just being 'open' at the top should allow a decent amount more air through (be it not as much as an open element though).

What do you guys think? (I wouldn't expect gains as much as from a regular open element, but i am wondering if i would get any gains at all?)

Drill a hole for the IAT sensor I zip tied mine to firewall away from as much heat as possible, since i have source for fresh incoming air its going to mounted somewhere else. As for that breather tube a chrome can be purchased at advance autoparts for a few bux.

there isnt much clearance between the hood and the top of the cleaner to allow you to see much of a gain, but anything is better then than that stock lid, Money wise-- for as much as you'd pay for the extreme lid an OE can purchased. and it wont look out of place, if done rite. There are pictures of TGO members engine bays somewhere on this site button will help you find them.

If you don't want to drill a new hole for your IAT than I wouldn't bother ever modding your car. The extreme lid will do nothing for your car unless you rig up a true cowl induction. The stock hood will slam right up against it blocking any air that could possibly get to it. I have this lid but only for asthetic reasons. It looks better when my hood is up at car shows but I know it does nothing for performance with my stock hood.

Shifty beat me to it. The only thing that lid is good for it a scoop/cowl hood application. If you still have the liner under your hood and you already have an open element on your car, you will notice the dent in it from the lid of the open element. If you are still running the stock intake, it's only about a 1/2" shorter. Air would have to climb up, change direction, go down, change direction again, go in, change direction yet again, then finally enter you engine. Reminds me of that thread from WAY back in the day when someone was talking about drilling holes in the top of the cleaner lid

Alrite, thats all i needed to know...

After looking for an open element that would look good in my stock engine bay, i found this one on summit (# PRO-141-752)...its black and says chevrolet around the rim of the lid and the wingnut is a chevy logo. Its $60 and it's gonna be about another $50 for a K&N filter to fit it, but ill get it eventually, probably in the fall/winter sometime. When i do get it, i'll make sure i can find the proper tools to drill a nice hole out for the IAT and do something about the breather.

yea i must admit that does look good--one of the best looking open elements ive seen, but i think that when i do buy the open element, im gonna get that one from summit thats black and says chevrolet on it (summit # PRO-141-752) . I think that would look pretty 'stock' in my engine bay. What do you guys think?

I probably wont be getting it until atleast the fall because i need an outdoor car cover (im gettin a nice one from CCC) and buildup some savings incase anything on my car goes, first.

I know summit sells reuseable filters seperately that are a little bit less expensive then the K&N's. (SUM-239142 thru SUM -239146) from 25.95 to 39.95

When it comes to my car, i don't 'skimp' on anything. If i'm going to put an air filter in, it's going to be the best air filter you can buy...thats just me though...I'm not going to do much to my car, so i figure that what little i'm going to do to it, should be of the highest possible quality.

I was just looking through the air cleaners on jegs, to see if they have any different air cleaners than summit, and i found this... i dont know what the hell it is, but i've never seen it before and wondering if any of you could explain it to me. Sounds like BS....

OK here is where reading comprehension comes in handy. If you would have thoroughly read the first post it says that K&N came out with a new xtreme flo lid that fits ALL STOCK GM VEHICLES FROM 1968 to 1995!!!. Check the part # on summit if you don't believe me.

And no, after shifty and 90rs305's advice i am not going to be getting the lid...but i had to clear that up about how it would fit on a stock TBI air cleaner.

Just throwing this one out there...but what about a dual-snorkel filter housing? From a 350 HO. I have one on mine and it breathes 10 times better than the stock housing and I still get nothing but cold air...

Hey DevilsAddvocate, how much difference can you tell with the X-Air lid on that set-up? I have always wondered about the gains when used right...

Don't mean to jack the thread, but has anybody ever heard of those "Tornado" thingy's? They're supposed to give the incoming charge a decent swirl to aid atomization...but has anybody ever used one? If so did it actually work? Not getting one...just wondering...

Yea man i wish i could find a dual snorkel...but it would have to be a factory GM one because i want my engine bay to appear 100% stock. I didnt know that 350 cars had dual snorkels....which cars had dual snorkels that would fit on ours besides the l69 HO 305????

Never used one, but I have never seen a positive review or seen a gain of any kind from one. It's total BS, to put it nicely.

EDIT: And that PRO-141-790 chevy air cleaner looks damn good, but its $140!!! For the price, i'll get the other one which is $60...or a dual snorkel if i can find one, and have the money for it...

i run the edelbrock like TWICEtheRICE. mine had an adaptor for the breather on it. i cut it out and stuck a hose up 2 it and it looks good! i can post a pic if u like. i drilled the iac in too. i used the old spacer though because i was afraid of hitting the coil wires. all i did was unscrew the threaded piece a little that keeps the lid on so it would clear the top so i can get the wing nut on. i plan on changing the filter itself to a k&n when this one dies out.

i have the same setup as shifty, and while it does look purty i agree that i get nothing more from it. i do plan on getting a small cowl hood one of these days so it might be put to use.

anyone ever made a custom air box for their cowl hood so that you only get the outside air into the filter assembly? the only thing i would be concerned about would be heavy rain water but i'm sure a drain hole could be incorporated easily.

how much do the xtreme air lids cost, i already have an open element but but i just got a jongbloed 3inch cowl hood and i would imagine that xtreme ail lid would work quite nice
