crap...help..did i do my open element wrong?

https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/t...imatetbi.shtml

^ i was reading that earlier and i did the open element a week ago. i did all of it exept i kept the space that goes from the tbi to the aircleaner. i kept it on there because ive gotta drop down and didnt want to hit the coil wire. was i not sopposed to do this? is it making my open element pointless? because thats what my intention from that article was down at the bottom. if i should remove it...how can i move the coil? i read u can bend it away??? thanx in advance!

btw, ive searched!

I did the open element with a Drop down one and kept the SPACER. I did however move my coil to the firewall next to the Wiper motor. Bought the Holley open element one also for like $20-30(can't remember exactly). Popped out one of the pop-outs and took my dremmel to the small hole till my air sensor was able to snap in.

Everything fits Great. Havent had any problems with the coil there for 5+ years now.

Hope this helps you out some.

Good Luck!

With a non drop air cleaner you can get rid of that spacer. It isn't really hurting anything the way you have it now.

Your fine. Since you have a drop-base air cleaner, you pretty much have to keep that spacer on. The only way to get rid of that spacer is to get a non-drop base.

That spacer does hinder flow somewhat, since it forces all the air going into the motor to go straight down the TBI unit, and the injectors sit right on top which blocks that flow. It's probably not going to make a huge difference on a stock motor though, I'd just stick with what you have for now.

EDIT: Shifty beat me to it.

There was one member who shorted out his electrical system because the drop base of his air cleaner rubbed the wires on top of the distributor raw. When they finally rubbed through and the short circuit happend, he lost functionality and gained a costly repair.

I just don't feel good about the OE install until I am sure the base clears the "dizzy".

I have a non-drop base but I kept the spacer because the filter that was included was only 1.5" tall, but hey, I got the whole assembly for $12.99

I can beat that.

I ordered my base from Summit to go with my K&N lid an element. Since I was a new customer, they sent me a 20 dollar gift certificate and a hat. The base only cost 15 bucks. I figure I made out five dollars, a hat and unrestricted air flow ahead.

Think that was 90rs305 who had wires short out and fried some things. The sparkplug wires I had to rearrange the way the sat on the dist. Was fairly easy to change how they sat on there so non poked out towards the air cleaner. The Cap itself doesnt hit the base. Just make sure if you keep the Coil under the cleaner it isn't rubbing any part of it. Cause with motor vibration it will eventually end up with a wire or two bare and arcing.

Putting some tape or something I feel is bad for this also. Cause if motor vibration can wear through the wire insulation itself then don't see why it wouldn't wear thru the tape also. Just prolonging it from happening.

I also have my sensor sitting in the back of the base. I put my hand under there(car off) and felt around to check wich was best position for it(base) to sit. Then put lid on and held the bottom in place while tighting the screw down. It can slide if not. Pulling the wires on the sensor tight wich can be bad.

Good Luck!

hmm..so everyones had no problems with an open element?when u delete some of the things from the origional airbox (u know like the vacumme line from the throttle body to the box) does it make your idle a little rough? mine surges from time to time and it started when i put this on...perhaps its just me noticing something i didnt before but...just wondering if anyone experenced that before

i got the edlebrock open element on my car, drop base, no spacer but the gasket(the carboard circle) i kept. all i did was take my coil, unbolt it where it mounts below the thorrtle bracket and turn it just enough so it would clear the open element. then i had to remove my cruise cable cuz it was hittin that but it wasnt a big deal for me cuz my cruise doesnt work. if u want i can take some pics for ya

make sure the vac line on the TB base is capped. The only change is the car doesnt warm up as fast.

i have everything in the stock locations and mine works fine... well... the underhood light decided to catch on the lid, so i took that off, but everything else is perfect, non-drop base edelbrock air cleaner that everyone got from autozone for 30 bucks and the K&N 14X3 filtercharger... no coil rubbing, no other interference. Its not hurting you the way its installed, the only thing that hurts is you, like me, dont have a cowl hood or any other way to get colder, outside air under the hood into the air cleaner. Open element obviously flows much better than a stock snorkel, but it also flows hot underhood air. Its really not that much, if any gain at all. I keep mine mainly because i like the Old School nostalgia look of it, and it sounds really freakin good at WOT... lol

I started to have little surge problems and i chased a Vaccoum line from the motor along the firewall down the driverside fender and when got to front of fender it went down into it to my vaccum canister. Was a bit rotted under there. due to age and exposure to road and such. Of course this was 91 camaro. Not sure about other years though. was like 4-5ft of line I replaced.

Well now this got me thinking, i'm running a drop base, with the gold ring, tbis draft from the sides so even though i have the injector pod spacer this would still be a restriction....By rights if you fab up a bracket for the coil to mount on the firewall you can run a drop base without the ring and clear everything?....THe car is stored not at the house so i cant run out and look at it, maybe i should just move the coil and get a non drop base...will help a little

im having a little trouble with my OE as well...

I've got a k&n 14x3 element with a drop-base, the base crunches down on the coil.. if i were to get a non-drop base.. would that clear it ok? or is there a base made with indents to clear it like the stock one?

i'm not too clear on how to move the coil.. and i'd rather not if i don't have to

A non drop base will sit a touch higher and should clear your coil. The last non drop base filter I installed on an LO3 did clear. My drop base didn't but hasn't really hurt anything.
