one man, one 305, one goal

These are the mods I plan to do to my car in the order I plan to do them. I know tuning is essential and I am researching it. I decided to save the "engine" mods for last in case i buy another motor, at least that way the car will be ready for it. I need to be emissions compliant. any suggestions what to do about the poor flowing heads, i just put what another member suggested. Any specific brand reccomendations are appreciated or any other thoughts etc. are appreciated

Modifications (in chronological order)
1. 14”x3” Open element air filter
2. 1 5/8 ” primary and 2 ½ ” (minimum) collector headers
3. 2 ½” dual with magnaflow mufflers and cats
OR
Y pipe 2 ½” primaries and 3” collector minimum
3” high flow catalytic converter
3” cat-back exhaust
4. Positraction
5. Transgo Shift Correction kit
6. Corvette TV sleeve and plunger (WOT 3-4 shifts).
7. Corvette Servo
8. 3.23 or 3.42 rear gears
9. Strut tower brace
10. Make factory FPR adjustable
11. Ultimate tbi modifications
12. Walbro 190 fuel pump
13. Performer tbi intake manifold
14. 1.6 roller rockers
15. lt1 cam
16. Ported stock heads(187 heads)
Well if it were me I would have them open up the intake side with a 1.94 valve, 3 angle valve job, polish the combustion chambers, bowl blend on both exhaust and intake plus clean up all the casting flaws. Just for giggles probably shave them a touch to bump the compression a bit.

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

single 3 will flow better than dual 2 1/2's, the velocity of the exhaust will actually pull more exhaust out.

what was your goal anyway? to runa certain time? just have a cool cruiser?

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

the 2.5" duals would have had to be custom, i like the idea of true duals though. my goal is to have a quick(low 14's) fuel efficient, cruiser that eats rice.

well yeah, the undercarriage is pretty tight for 2 1/2 duals..i know because i have an exhaust shop..anyway its deffinately doable..some ppl want a 12 sec. car that gets 25 mpg w/o a turbo/super charger..

Number 2 on your list should be Tuning equipment.Believe me,If I had to start all over again I would've tuned up my car then TUNED my car from the get go.you don't know how bad I need a tune.

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

If I were you, I would port the heads along with the three angle valve job first. You really won't see the full benifits of the upgraded intake or free flowing exhaust until you uncork the heads, believe me, been there, done that.

I have a 305 with pocket ported and 3 angle valve job, casting 416 heads. The engine in a 74 Chevy Nova runs mid 14s.

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

He can do that but to get the true benefits of it he needs to tune it.There's a big differance between a 74 carb engine and a 88+ tbi motor. Not trying to be rude just stating the obvious point that will be agreed upon by others once they read this thread.

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

You're also wrong, the exhaust is THE most restrictive part on these cars.

I'll second the suggestion to get into chip tuning right after you do exhaust. Any mods much more than that will benefit greatly by tuning the ECM properly.

Hopefully you've picked up on the fact that mail order chips are junk and are to be avoided.

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

Exhaust from the cylinder heads back and DIY_Prom tuning are where to start. After learning to tune on a stockish engine, buy the 30 PSI GM regulator and a TPI fuel pump. Then put in a more aggressive camshaft (Production LT4 comes to mind).

Ok it should be number 3 on his list,I figured if he started as close to stock as possible it would have been easier to tune due to the fact of him being a novice tuner.

1994-1996 4.3/305/350/454 TBIs in Vans/Trucks/etc. OVER 8,600 lbs GVW. It was used to help prevent vapor locking in high ambient temperatures in those heavily loaded applications.

It is GM P# 17113079

Re: one man, one 305, one goal

i've seen plenty of cars running a mandrel bent 3" exhaust running down deep into the 12s. my 86 TA ran 13.50s all day long on a very mild small block with Edelbrock 6872 headers/y pipe, and a Flowmaster catback minus the cat.
