350 Tbi with 305 tbi computer?

Hey guys,

Turns out the 305 block I got for a $100 has a spun bearing, crank is bad, and doesn't have any type of aftermarket cam like what was promised. Which was a 305 that runs great and has a cam. So I trying to get the money on that back.

But in the meantime my dads old friend who use to race still has his old 350 race motor that has a cam and other work done to it and he might sell it to me for cheap.

So the question is this. If I put the 350 in can I run it on the 305 tbi computer with the 305 sensors and computer and will it be fine for getting around and quick runs here and there?

Are will it be better to just stay carbed (whats on the engine now) and if so whats all involved in swapping out?

I have a 90 camaro so the gauges are the electronic ones?
Will the distributor in the car now work with a carb 350?
I now I have to drop fuel pressure and change the throttle cables to work on the carb but what else would be involved?

Thanks guys!

While not optimum, you will be able to run that engine with that computer. I was using the stock 305ci computer when I swapped in my 400ci. The only thing I did was throw in some 350 injectors and an adjustable FPR. Again, not perfect but do-able

as for switching to carb, you will need at very least a new distributor and a 3-way fuel pressure regulator (as pressure is way too high for carb and these cars have a return-style fuel setup). Also may have to get creative in getting the fuel pump to kick on and removing VATS if you have it.

Thats what I was afraid of.
I do have vats and really don't want to have to mess with all that if possible.

Sounds like I'm going with the 305 system.
So the question is I can run the 350 with the 305 injectors as long as I don't go to high in the rpm redline say 5k right?

Also I know its recomended but is it necessary to switch to the 350 knock sensor and other components from a caprice?

Trying to do this on a really small budget since other money is going into the house I'm fixing so I can move in.

Completely forgot about the knock sensor. I believe they are different for 305/350, so definitely change that. You don't want timing pulled due to false knock and want to make sure real knock is being adjusted for.

Again, there are a lot of things to do to optimize the setup for the 350, but I don't think you'll kill anything by running the 305 injectors and keeping off the gas pedal (no full throttle)

Re: 350 Tbi with 305 tbi computer?

Turns out the 350 I'm getting is most likely a L05 from a van and I'm hopefully getting everything including the TBI top with the 350 injectors. If so I've been reading into the Eprom tuning on this site and since I tune OBDII cars I'm in the know for this and have access to chip burning equipment I think I'll make a hybrid file using the L05 Caprice cop spark tables and the regular caprice injector references and then use the Camaro L03 shift properties and torque converter lockup settings.

Sound good?

Re: 350 Tbi with 305 tbi computer?

Awesome and great news.

Just got done building the conversion chip using the 350 injector values and spark settings while keeping the tcc lockup settings from the 305 camaro. Changed a few setting with wot fueling but genrally its stock values. So once the swaps done I'll see how she runs. It's a shame none of the computer systems are OBDII cuz you give me a GM OBDII I can tune it to whatever and getting used to Tuner Pro over HP Tuners is a learning curve but the principals are the same.

Any one know what the caprice cop cars were rated at for horse and torque?

Did you ever get it running ? I looked and couldn't find good info on the 9C1 horsepower/torque ratings. I found one place that said the horsepower was 190 , but could not find the torque rating anywhere.
