To replace the valve seals you're not going to be far into it at all. You only have to take the valvecovers off. It's an afternoon project.

do a compression test and then go from there... In my situation I had to rebuild... my cylinder walls were all scuffed and scratched, I remember the mechanic telling me I had a couple of grooves in a couple of cylinders...

What he said, this isn't a rebuild condition. This is a "figure out why it feels sluggish" problem.

I as well had the smoke... now that I remember, I believe my car was hemorrhaging... rear main seal, valve covers, blow by, oil was pooling in the air filter, coming through the vent hose... the one that connects to the cleaner on the passengers side...

Faster, go to a steep hill and then let it rip downhill... ... lol... well there are things that you can do to make it breath easier... headers, intake manifold, performance CAT, aftermarket muffler for that roar most of us enjoy hearing...

there will be welding involved, as well as cutting to allow the A/C compressor to fit... I looked into it as well, but I came to the quick conclusion that I just rather have a 4th gen, than transplant an LS1 into a 3rd gen... then again, maybe I'll do it after college is all done with, this of course I would try and get my hands on a GTA or a 3rd gen Trans Am...

We can help you go faster, that's a lot easier than a rebuild!

You can't get away from the tuning though, you either have to do it yourself or pay someone a considerable some to do it for you. You can read up on it, it's not so bad. Computer is what makes TBI better than carb. You can have power and pretty good efficiency.

well yeah, but I doubt he has an E4mE quadrajet installed... I think that's the name, correct me if I'm wrong... i have never had luck with this cars carb... replaced the original one after having it overhauled by a reputable tech...

Re: rebuilding 305?????

I don't know this for sure, but I think that I can get 300hp out of my 305...and I plan to. The main performance upgrades are going to be a set of 305 vortec heads, Hedman 1 5/8 LT headers, 3" side exit exhaust, LT1 cam, Professional Products vortec cyclone intake, and a Holley 670 street avenger carb. After this stuff, comes the nitrous!

With Vortec heads it's definitely doable. Just watch your RPMs, these LO3 short blocks shouldn't be revved as high as a new Vortec engines.

Yikes, for that much money you could buy a complete 5.3 motor that makes almost 300hp.

Re: rebuilding 305?????

You can find some on ebay every now and then. You may be better off looking locally so that you wouldn't have to pay shipping. But you are probably gonna want an LS1 oil pan and front end components anyways...and that starts adding up quickly. You may would be better off just getting an LS1 if you were going to go that route. Probably spend about a $1000 on the motor. Check in the engine swap thread if that is what you are thinking of doing.

I just like how that sounds. I am in the same spot right now but this makes sense to me. Gonna cost me more but at least there will be no dollars wasted.

I am with you as well. It isn't going to cost you more though...it just won't make the same amount of power, dollar for dollar. I am probably going to have close to $1000 in my 305...and it will be right about 300ish fwhp. If I did all of the same kinds of mods to a 350...it would probably be close to 400ish fwhp. Building up a 305 is not the best option...but it is what I am choosing to do.

Re: rebuilding 305?????

Actually, I meant the guy was right. I'm just gonna do a nice tune-up on my 305. Maybe some very low priced (like free) mods and wait till I land a decent block somewhere. Actually I'm now eyeing that 383 bare block in the Summit catalog. Had a guy local selling a 350 complete for $200 but I'm afraid of what condition it may be in.
