New car curiosity.

so heres my issue. surging idle or when sitting in drive but recedes after snapping throttle. vacuum leaks checked for.
chugging while driving at cruising rpm
terrible gas mileage, whole tank in 125 highway miles.

i bought this car for 2500$.
it came with a bunch of receipts and the motor was supposedly build by a shop out east.
350 roller forged pistons
edelbrock aluminum heads.
"street" camshaft
"used" 65gph tbi injectors
Edelbrock tbi intake mani
b&M 2000 stall
etc etc

but theres a charge for 300$ in "eprom and computer programming" but on another parts is the part number for the 305 tbi thermo master chip.
this car seems to be holding back gobs of power. and im wonder if maybe just the tune alone could be the culprit.

plus have been pulled and looked fine. motor only has a few thousand on it.

thanks a bunch

Re: New car curiosity.

Nice looking car and welcome to TGO!

I don't really understand what you are saying about the prom tuning, but if it hasn't been tuned then that is for sure the reason. The car isn't running right, but you got a steal on that car imo! My car runs used to run perfect and only got about 125-150 to the tank

Re: New car curiosity.

Most likely tune is the issue. I woiuld load winALDL and see what the closed loop fueling looks like. No CE light right?

Re: New car curiosity.

the body is bit rough. pictures are flattering. but i did get a good deal. i drove far enough to get it lol

would just swapping chips make a big difference like say a 91 caprice 350 one. or should i just have one burned for me

Where in Washington are you located? We've got a few prom burners around here in kitsap I'm sure one of us could help you tune it

Re: New car curiosity.

I'm in the puyallup area but I have no issue travelling. I love meeting up and talking with fellow thirdgenners. This is my third thirdgen. And my first tbi one. I did a tpi conversion but never got a good tune but that car is on hold.

Hopefully i can get this all figured out, so far i really like the tbi system. otherwise I'm going to do a radical can and carb swap.
I'm looking to get alot out of this motor. More of a performance build than anything.

Re: New car curiosity.

I have the same problem currently with my 91 and what i am seeing the problem is is this. When you change the heads and intake and dont use the egr the computer still is trying to enable the egr and it surges in the loop while running. I'm actualy swapping to carb this weekend since its cheaper than getting a tune and then as i continue building on it i wont have to keep tunning it. good look with whichever decision you make.
