Planning the upgrade from the TBI crossfire fuel pump to a TPI fuel pump.

Ordered the Bosch TPI fuel pump kit 69218 from Rock Auto and received it today.

I have taken a pic of everything that came with the kit.

I haven't pulled the tank yet, but in preparation for the fun to commence I was just wondering if I have everything I will need to take on the upgrade from my '83 crossfire TBI pump to the TPI pump?

I have also purchased an AC Delco TS44 strainer not in the photo.

i changed my tbi pump to a tpi pump.directly bolt in,car makes good power.however the engine surges at cruise speed.may not be related.

Changed my TBI fuel pump in the K1500 to a TPI pump.

Turns out the pickup fuel sender is set up for 3/8 tubing and hose, and the TPI pump is sized for 5/16 hose.

Might not be an issue in a Camaro. I don't know.



PS: Use the replacement wire harness, and VERIFY PROPER VOLTAGE to the pump WHILE THE PUMP IS RUNNING. Very common to lose >1 volt on the power side, and >1 volt on the ground side. Fuel pump then runs >2 volts less than alternator voltage, volume pumped suffers. GM is known to use under-sized wire with excessive voltage drop. Aftermarket replacement harness is recommended.

I put a new sending unit & TPI pump in my 1988 Caprice. Soldered the harness directly to the pump and through connector on the sending unit. One of the reason the harness breaks down is poor connections. Poor connections means higher resistance which means the wires run hotter. etc. Might be harder to R&R down the road, but should hopefully last longer.

At which wire and where should I volt check? How did you solve the different line sizing?

The closer to the pump you test for voltage, the better.

Testing for amperage can be done anywhere on the wire--current is the same in a circuit no matter where you test, but voltage varies with location if there's resistance in the circuit.

When I tested my K1500, I popped the four-wire connector apart, about a foot from the gas tank. Then I installed a four-wire jumper harness between the vehicle connectors that I had just opened up, and tested voltage by piercing the insulation on the jumper harness. That way I didn't damage the insulation of the vehicle harness.

High-quality hose and fuel-injection style hose clamps, instead of the cheap hose clamps that come with the pump.



The smooth fuel-injection clamps don't damage the hose like the cheap clamps.

So you just went with a piece of 3/8 and clamped it on the smaller nipple using fuel pump clamps?

In truth, I don't remember if I used 3/8, and crushed it down on the 5/16 nipple, or if I used 5/16 hose and managed to stretch it over the 3/8 tubing.

Kinda thinking I used Aeroquip push-lock hose in 5/16, a 5/16 clamp on the fuel pump, and a 3/8 clamp on the sending unit.

At any rate, "so far, so good". Works fine, almost two years since I installed that pump.
