Dependable...?
I'm 17 and my Trans Am is my daily driver... right now its stock under the hood.... but i have a few bucks...
this is my plans...
350 block
turned and balenced crank
new connecting rods
new flat top pistion
(just a compleately fresh bottom end...)
then this kit from jegs www.jegs.com part # 510-300-503-1
which includes...
Hydraulic Camshaft and Lifters .473''/.488'' Intake/Exhaust @ .006''
Fully Assembled Aluminum Cylinder Heads 2.02''/1.60'' Intake/Exhaust Valves, 66cc
Aluminum Dual Plane Intake Manifold
Double Roller Timing Chain and Gears
Hardened Push Rods
ARP Head Bolts and Assembly Lube
then im going to put a 670 cfm edelbrock carb on top of it with a set of headers (not sure yet)
is this the type of motor that is always going to turn over and go fine or do you think i will have to be doing a lot of tuning and tinkering with it??? all i can think is what about you all?

anytime you start building a car its probably gonna become more and more unreliable so dont get mad if it decides to break every now and then **** happens

It'll be a good daily drive and very dependable as long as you don't run the crap out of it all the time and don't ever let the engine rev past it's limit or something will surely break.

I've been told aluminum heads aren't the best for a daily driver. One time overheating and they need to be rebuilt.
The more performance you have the more unreliable it will be. That's the way I see it, unless you go out and buy a new car.

so you dont think the aluminum heads are a good idea for a daily driver? the way i see it.. they are the new thing out. they are way lighter... if they are not any good then why do LT-1's and LS-1's have them???

Thanks ORAY...
I talked to my uncle who races in the NHRA Pro Mods (bad start for his season...) he added some stuff up and checked into it some... he thinks i should have every bit of 390 horse power to the rear wheels! talk about power added... im cruzin around in a good looking car with 160 or so horse power... here before too long i should be around 400!!!! more then double...
i think even if the aluminum heads dont hold up in heat as good... i have enough commen sense not to run it hot!

Your welcome! Good luck. Must be nice to have some one in the family who races. Got all that info at your finger tips. Nice car by the way. I used to have a 1987 GTA. Right now I have a 1991 Z28 1LE. I really miss my GTA though. I'll probably get a burgundy one later on but my Z28 is really nice also. Later.

Yeah i love my Trans Am more and More everyday... its been really dependable... i just dont like looking at the odometer and seeing 130 thousand miles.... that and not having that much power.
every kid in my town has some riced out honda... most of them can beat me... it makes me soo mad... thats when i started looking into performence... i know i could buy a lot of bolt on stuff for this 305 but to ME its just not worth it when i can build a 350 that will take care of most any street cars around here...
i cant wait to have this motor done, pull up to some droped honda civic and just blow his doors off... then when they ask me "man what do you have under the hood" im just going to say "AMERICAN HORSE POWER".

You're on the right track but i have a few pointers for you. I assume you have an LG4 (carbed 305). Keep the CCC carburetor. You can easily get thing to flow much more than you'll ever need and your gas mileage won't totally go down the ****er. THat cam might be a little too obnoxious for a daily driver. If you won't a cam with that kind of lift, i'd definately look into roller cams. It might cost a little more but its worth it (roller lifters and a roller cam shouldn't cost more than $400 assuming you are going to get an '87-up 350 block). You're going to need to run at least 9.5:1 compression to make up for the heat loss from the aluminum heads.
