funny thing happened at the inspection center

hey all,
just a funny story and if any thoughts on why would help.
Ok so this past week i finally drove my 85 trans am to the inspection center in wayne nj(if any one knows this one). so i sit in line for 35 min and as i am sitting there my temp guage is rising but i figure its almost my turn so no prob. anyway i get out, the technician(if i can call them that) tests the emmisions, which failed, and does whatever. so i am at the other end of the bay, and he pulls my car up to the machine that tests your suspension and brakes, and as he goes to inch it foward the car stalls out. so he calls me over and all embarased i have to restart the car but not luck. so several of the techs have to push me out of the stall and i fail inspection cuz they couldnt finish and they were closing. so i sit there for an hour figureing that it just overheated, but when i try to start it after 30 min it is as if the battery is dead, it wont crank over. so to end this story, as i am callin the sister to come and jump me and or drive me home i turn it over one last time and low and behold it starts up. What the Fudge? any ideas?

Bad alternator? Bad connection? Get a VOM and check the voltage at the alternator (After you get the jump) 14-15 volts are good. less than 13, not good.

You can try to get home with it (quick) but it will most likely die again. Doing this also beats the shnozz out of the battery so ... if it's old a new one may be a good idea (as a lame battery can cause the new alternator to fail)
