HELP! 2.8L V6 stalled outside town - What could be wrong??!

Okay my friend just called me from 250 miles away, his car is dead on the side of the highway. He was going down the road and the car just died. He said if he lets it sit for a little while, it will fire, but only run for a couple seconds, and then stall again. Its 3:10 AM right now and me and my friend are about to drove 3 1/2 hours to go see if we can get it fixed, because none of us have enough money to tow it 250 miles. Could it be something like sugar in the gas tank? Or maybe fuel pump? What the heck could we do to try and limp this thing home? HELP!

bring a scanner if you can. You might want to bring some new plugs and oil just in case he has flooded his car trying to turn it over. Does he know anything about cars? Did he checkt o make sure there was nothing obstructing his air intake? How exactly did it die? Was he driving it? Need more info.

Okay well after 4 hours of driving to get to my friend's car, and then another 2 hours of troubleshooting, we are pretty sure its the fuel pump. The ignition system appears to be working fine, we pulled a plug wire and grounded it against the frame and it is sparking.

There is no fuel getting to the engine, as far was we can tell. We unbolted the steel fuel line from where it meets the hi pressure rubber line uner the hood, and it was bone dry. When we turned the key forward to the on position, no fuel came out of it. We then pulled the other end of the steel fuel line off the filter, and gas was coming out of the other part of the line which comes from the gas tank. We blew compressed air through the steel line, but it did not appear to be blocked.

When we turn the key forward, there is no audible sound from the gas tank which sounds like the fuel pump coming on. I even had my friend take off the gas cap and put his ear to the filler neck and listen for any noise when i turned the key to on. There is power at the fuel pump fuse, because I removed the fuse, and touched the positive fan wire to the terminal and the fan came on (with the key forward).

So here is our problem: His car is 250 miles south of town in a gas station parking lot in a little BFE town. How hard is it going to be and what all tools and stiff do we need to drive back down there and drop the gas tank to replace the fuel pump? I am dead tired right now from driving for 8 hours and working in 95 degree heat for 2. I dont think i can take 2 more trips down there, we need to get this damn car back. BTW, towing is pretty much out of the question because we are all just about flat broke, and we dont have a truck to tow with.

What the crap should we do?
