Checked ignition system, now backfires!

I went through the ignition system checking out every part (because i was experiencing a power loss)

anyway, it turned out to be a couple burned wires, so i replaced them, and now the car backfires

the car is getting spark at teh coil, and i tested it at the plug (jsut tried number 2) : my guess is taht the timing is off, because i turned the crank by hand (well, with a ratchet). i cant see why that would cause the timing to be off, but im just shooting in the dark now, and i'm about the take a 20 lb sledgehammer to this damn car

anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

Are you sure you got the wire connected to the correct plugs? Mine did the same thing when I plugged them up wrong.

You crossed a couple spark plug wires. Look them over and make sure the firing order is correct when you put them back on.

i have completely rewired the spark wires probably 5 times now, and my dad has checked it everytime, and its the same

i read another post about how the distributor can get become 180 of the rest of hte engine, so you have to move the wires 4 spots ahead - i tried this with the same result as if i tried to start the car with the coil disconnected - just cranks, but at least it doesnt backfire

i have absoultely NO idea what it could be right now, and i hate to have to call my mechanic to come out and repair it

Duff,

Turning the engine won't change the timing. Only loosening and turning the distributor will do that, unless the timing chain has slipped. Also, there is no way to get the distributor position 180° out of phase unless the distributor was removed.

Recheck the wires for #5 and #7. Those two are very easy to get mixed up.

well, than i guess the timing chain is not busted, becuase when i turned the crank, the distributor moved also

therefore i must have wired the car wrong?

thanks a lot for the response vader!
