I removed the ac crap from under the hood today and noticed these spots where some thing was apparently connected. what would that have been? and is the car ok with out it? also can I safely remove the top highlighted hose from where it is connected to the firewall?

Those look like either the Heater core lines or 1 of them is the Transmission cooler line.

I've always heard that the silver can is called a dryer. If it is left open to the elements very long, it loses its drying capability. I think it suck any free moisture out of the the freon. I'm not an expert on that but that is the way it was explained to me.

The silver can is the accumulator, yes you can remove it if you take out the a/c. The two lower spots look like the a/c used to connect there and one is a port for the high pressure side. The top one I don't know. You may want to check your smog system since the diverter valve is in that area.

Dragon-
The steel tube looks to have been cut off. Mine runs along the frame rail.
The back connects to one of the two heater core stubs.
The front connects to the radiator.
In the middle there is a "T" (I don't see yours) that goes straight up and connectos to the vacuum operated valve that controls the coolant flow.
If picture attaches, it is the black heater hose running parallel to my forearm.
S-D
Sorry for the poor photo, I was using it to remember how wires were routed, but happened to have it available.

Thanx swerve-driver after reading your post(and looking at the pic) Im guessing the heater core went out on the previous owner and rather than replace it they just gutted part of the heating system.
which makes sence now. the hose that comes off the rad goes into the back of the engine and Im guessing that is originaly the hose that went to the heater core.
