used the VIN decoder and got this???

Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Make: Chevrolet
Carline Code: F-Body
Carline Series: Sport Coupe, Z28
Body Type: 2 door coupe
Engine Code: 173 ci V6 LB8 (1986)
6 is the CHECK DIGIT.
Model Year: 1985
Assembly Plant: Norwood
Production Sequence: ******

Why would my 85 come with an 86 engine??

EDIT: You never want to post the entire VIN anywhere in the public domain. I can probably get a registration for your car, and legally steal/take it from you, or impose a mechanics' lein, etcetera, from the information you provided. the sequence number doesn't have any value for determining how the car was built or equipped, so don't post it and endanger your security.

The decoders aren't 100% accurate. For one they don't recognize and decode Turbo TA vins very well at all. It could also have been a mid year change. Or another similar change made later on in the model year.

It probably just went by the engine code (8th digit is an "S"), and mistakenly thought that the LB8 started in '86.

The LB8 rpo code was used for all 85-89 2.8's.
