Oil Pressure Gauge Drops to 0 !!??

Hey there, new guy to the boards here. Just bought my first 3rd gen last summer, and I love it. Sounds like you guys really know what's goin' with these cars, so I gotta question for ya'll. My ride......

86 TransAm
305 TPI Automatic
187,XXX miles
All Original except the paint (that I know of)

I just noticed today that my oil gauge drops to 0 when I go around a corner or pull up to a stop. As soon as the car is straight again or idles for a sec. when I stop, the gauge jumps back right to the middle. I never noticed it before today. Anybody know what's going on???

Thanx a lot,
Neil

Sounds like you better check your oil level right away!

Yup, start there.

If the level is at "full" and it still does it, try adding another quart. If that fixes it (or at least greatly improves it) then the pickup has probably fallen off of the oil pump, and the hole in the side of the pump is probably getting uncovered when the oil all sloshes away from it.

There's no cure for that other than pulling the pan and fixing it.

RB83L69 is probably right. I had that happen to me TWICE. I just wish that I would fixed it right the first time. The second time I had to do it with the engine in the car. Not fun.

Guys...this is your oil pressure we're taking about here! Your car does that too and you haven't gotten around to fixing it! Come on.

Easy Fix

Wow, all that info is good to know. So I just checked the oil level just to make sure. I thought for sure it was good, but apparently it hasn't been looked at for a while . The level didn't even register . Some new high-mileage fluids, and problem is solved. Thanks for the help though!
