Weird horrific noise from under car

When my car is in Park or Nuetral, sometimes I will hear a loud metallic noise from underneath. It almost sounds as if the starter is trying to engage. It will do this sporadically whether the engine is warm or cold. Any ideas? It doesn't happen with the car in gear.

if its an auto it could be loose converter bolts. that happened on mine.

It's an auto. Loose converter bolts huh? Sounds annoying. Was yours doing the same thing? The car still drives OK. I'll probably have to check that though.

it would do it mostly when it was cold when you first started it up. it would go "clankclankclankclank" for a few seconds then it was fine exept if you reved it up in park or neutral it would do it like once or twice.

This is more of a very short loud clank, like if you accidently tried to start the car when it was already running, but then immediately let go of the key. A loose converter would seem likely though because I'm also getting a clunk when I shift into gear or let off the throttle.

check/fix the TQ converter to flexplate bolts ASAP...

otherwise, you'll have to buy a new flexplate... or worse, damage the TQ converter.

or even better. it could fall out, bounce off the shield then the flex plate will catch it and somewhow wedge it between the flex plate and the engine block. at which point since the TQ to flex plate bolts are harder than the block metal the block cracks and spewes out you coolant when your goin 120km/hr. Thus ending your drive to the beach and starting your 1 mile walk to a steel mill to use their phone for a tow truck. leaving you and your buddies girlfriends in the car. but then when the tow truck arieved you find out the girls have to sit on your lap in the front seat. 1 tons have hard suspensions

but this happened to me in a 2.2 daytona 8 years ago, still Torque converter bolts are aircraft grade bolts and then x 2500 rpm flexplate and % by engine block. I wish i had my digital camera back then.

later

Edit: oh yeah, it made a wierd horrific noise seldomly for a few day before that then on the highway it made an even louder horrific noise (like two dogs making love to a cat) for awhile until i couldn't see because of the coolant burning.

LMAO

That's a dramatic way to justify an engine swap!

funny story, but back on topic... check the Tourq arm mount, my car was doing the same thing not to long ago. it should be right next to the tail shaft on the end of the trans, bolted to the trans even.
