Dies when hot...

Ok...this thing is just about ready to go to the trash...I have had this car now for 14 months and put a TOTAL of 300 miles on it...it is NOT the TOY I was hoping for...but here is the latest crap...

Just a little background...83/305/5-speed/carb

New Cam
Lifters
Distributor
Wires
Starter
Battery
Timing Chain
Heads
Intake and gaskets (3times)

My problem started when I overreve'd the engine trying to avoid being SMASHED by a tractor trailer...started ticking then cracking back through the carb. Did timing chain first...matched it up mark to mark...no good...finally pulled cam and lifters and the #6 lobe and lifter was bad...long story...did the rest of the crap...heads and all...

Cranked the engine around to TDC on # 1, Set the new distributor in...dropped to line with # 1.... Started right up...(after new starter and battery from sitting for so long...) little rough at idle. can't really time it with a light as the t/c has the wrong tab on it, but it is close. From the board I have been told around 12:30 for the 83/305...runs OK, idle at 1000 or so...temp comes up and then drops with the thermostat, stays right around 180...take it for a ride, and maybe a mile along, when i come to a stop, then RPM's drop and the engine dies...WONT restart...just spins...finally after like 10 minutes, I can restart it by holding the throttle to the floor while cranking it...then rush home before it dies again...

ANY ideas,,,,anything....I am at the end of my patience...if I can't get this thing fixed, someone out there is going to get a car for nearly FREE...I have HAD it...

Sorry for the vent...but you guys on this board have been FANTASTIC!

One last time...PLEASE...

ALL COMMENTS and SUGGESTIONS welcome!

Jim

Sounds electronic to me, bro. Sounds like something might be heating up and then that 10 minute break is allowing it to cool off.

Try the ignition module? Mine went out because of heat. On top of Distributor in a little black box. New distributor huh? did you put a new cap & module on. If you didnt that may be the problem. The ignition module I mean.

I think it is vapor locking on you. I had the same exact problem with my '87 Camaro 305 carb. Check to see if you have an electric fuel pump in your tank along with the mecional fuel pump on the engine. Chevrolet put it there because of vapor locking problems in our cars. I thought it was ing. as well and spent alot of money for nothing untill i found out about the pump in the tank. if you have one there should be three wires coming into the tank from the floor behind the back seat they are blue, black, and green or tan. if the green or tan wire is there you have a pump in the tank. and it has quit. just a tip It is a pain in the #$% to drop the tank. You have to Drop the axel to the ground, remove the exaust from under the tank and drop and twist the tank to get the filler neck from the body. Good luck and hope this helps
