what engine?

ok well i got me a 350, 4-bolt block, standard bore in great shape, and i need a new engine with plenty of power to get my formula through the corners and have soem fun, so im looking to try to get like 300 at the ground, or more, but i also need more torque to get her off the line, so im thinking like 350 or higher. no what are your opinions/combonations of things i could toss into this engine to get it near this range, this will not be a daily driver, but for every once in a while i take her to school or to cruse, i got a 78 c10 for that.

ok this is what i was thinking.
355, 357, 385, 383, 396?

what do you think on these engines, and what combinnations do you reccomend?

well arent a 355 and a 357 are just different overbores with stock stroke, then isnt a 385 just a 350 strokedand bored over .040 instead of the 383's .030 overbore?

id say go with a 383/385 (whichever your block needs to be bored to... or if you want to go cheaper and not get a new crank, you can build a 355/357

lol 350 hp is a pretty small goal. Its not hard to make a streetable 383 that puts 450 hp to the wheels n/a (you just have to invest in some good parts). However as needs to be said at somepoint theres no replacement for displacement. The bigger engine with equivalent parts will go faster and a bigger engine making the same sort of power as a smaller engine should last longer.

well this is what i was thinking for a 383.

vortec heads ported and polished a little
Edelbrock intake, probally a performer or what ever fits the heads
edelbrock 750cfm carb
4340 forged crank, rods, and keith black pistons,
and a comp cams cam, dunno on the specs though, a pertronix HEI, 8.8mm wires.

what else could you all reccomend, i dont need to much power, i would like to build this engine mild now and leave room for improvement later down the road when i get used to the power.

this will be backed to a t-5 which i will be new too.

roflmfao :sillylol: good luck with running a t-5 behind a 383. Ever wonder why GM never put a t-5 behind a 350?!?!? Because they didnt think itd last 5 minutes. A t-5 behind a 383 wouldnt last 2 seconds youd blow it up pulling out of your driveway. Go get some sub frames and a t-56 and then come back. I assume your also going to build a 383 with a stock ignition module, get some crazy cam with the stock computer??? Man you cant build an engine without the proper building blocks. Go get a transmission, rear end, suspension, brakes, ignition, fuel pump, tires, *** im sure theres more. Once you have something to build on then you can StArT to think about building an engine.

hey why dont you make sure you know before you open your mouth.

i have SFC's, waiting to be welded in, hotchkis LCA's and a hotckis ajustable panhard bar. along with a few other things like custom STB and wonderbar.

but the t-5 will stand up numb nuts if you get the g-forese t-5 rebuild kit, its a rebuild kit to get your car into 10's proven.

aww you didnt even curse at me once right until the "numb nuts" comment but even thats not bad. I appreciate the fact that you didnt start a flame war because quite obviously i didnt know about some of the things you mentioned. Ive never heard of a kit that you can build up a t-5 to withstand that kind of power but hey ya learn something new every day.

You said it was a "new t-5" is there an advantage to buying a t-5 and beefing it up over getting a t-56 or is it just a cost advantage? Also what are the specs on the pistons your using. I have been looking at all of my options for building a 383 (when i get the cash together) and piston selection is something i really dont understand. Sorry for the earlier dumbass post it appears you definitly understand what youre doing.

Tell me about this G-Force kit!!!

I took the T-5 out of my Z28 and put in a very stout TH350 to with stand the abuse of my 383. The combo runs great, just a little trouble with the whole gas mileage, highway thing. I want to do a 6spd but don't want to invest the money right now. If you can enlighten me about this T5 in the 10s kit I would appreciate it.

BTW, my engine is now 385 low compression blower engine. Sports a Cola 4340 crank, Eagle 4340 Hbeam rods, SRP forged pistons and Comp blower grind. AFR 190s(I ported) and HSR intake(I ported). I am shooting for 10s with an ATI Procharger...

Good luck with yours...

My T5 has lasted more than 5 minutes. You don't have to beat the **** out of the transmission. If you do some little things like using the clutch to shift, the tranny will last a little while.
Since you know so much about what to do then tell me, what engine, tranny, and rear end combo are you running.
Go educate yourself before you come on this board, run your mouth, and look like a dumbass. Thanks.

There is quite a bit of info over on the transmission board about the G force kit. I am a little skeptical about it myself, but I believe one guy on here is running one now.

Car: 89 TA
Engine: 413 TPI
Transmission: TKO 600
Axle/Gears: 3.42
I actually am dropping a 383 in my 89TA but keeping it TPI but I have a T-5 and I heard that if you go pretty big with the rear end gear you could get away with useing the stock trans. I was figuring a 3.73 but I don't know how many spline axels I have since it's a '89 so I was going to put the gear in and put a stud gurdle on the rear and see if it blows.
