Ok I am just throwing this out there but has anybody put an 82 Trans AM shifter(button in the middle on top like the old 70's Bird's) into a 83-92 Firebird before? I want to know because I really want to put this type of shifter into my 86 Trans AM and I just want to know if this possible or not? And if it is, is there any thing that needs to be done for it to go in or will it just fit in nicely?

an 82 "transam" shifter should work since its still a thirdgen. thirdgens range from 82-92.

If you're talking about just changing the handle, that's very simple. On the front of the handle facing the dash is a pin/clip actually more like a big staple, use a thin screwdriver to pull it out and the handle should pull right off. Pop on the button top handle and replace the pin and you're done.

Some of the older shifters had the round ball on top. There is no pin on the side of those. You have to pull the button out then get some C-clip pliers and remove a c-clip then the ball will come off.

When I had the 700-R4 installed into my car I wanted to install a later model shifter. Unfortunately it didn't work because the length of the shifter base was different, and just wouldn't otherwise fit, so I got my existing shifter modified so I could select all gears.

If you want to just change from a T shifter to the top mounted push button then that should be doable, but will require a little work.

The T shifter has a U shaped clip that holds the T on, but the button shifter has a sirclip (sp) on the top of the shifter shaft. So, you'll need to cut a small ring at the top of the shaft in order to get the sirclip on it.

If that's all as clear as mud, just ask for clarification.

Thanks for the input guys but all I wanted to know was if it is possible to replace my whole t-handle shifter unit will all the hardware and the shifter from an 82 Trans AM. And it should just bolt up right?

If you want a yes/no answer, mine would tend towards no. At least, not without a little work.

The later year shfters don't sit in the 82 Trans Am shifter recess but it might work the other way round.

If it does, the length of the shifter base from the 82 Trans Am is your next problem as it is longer than what was used in later years, having an effect on cable tension. So you'll have to come up with some solution for mounting the transmission cable and shifter lock cable to it.

Will it work? Only one way to find out and that's give it a go.

Ok well thanks again and I guess once the snow is gone here I will start to find out if it is going to work or not.
