Here is the recap on my cars current problems, and repairs done to it. Well about 5 months ago I let my sister drive my '86 camaro to the store, why she was gone one of my friends tells me that he needs a ride home. So we go down stairs to wait for her to come home. When she gets back she doesn't turn the car off because I was leaving. My friend and I get in the car and start to leave. Just as soon as I put it in drive it would drive fine, then when I push on the gas it would bog down compleatly almost to the point of dying. You would have to slowly push on the gas to get it to run at all.(I could only get up to about 30 mph on the way home) So I had a so called machanic look at it, he had said that the carburator was all messed up and warped. So the carb was rebuild and cleaned and everthing, and since the carb was all messed up it fould up the spark plugs. So I put in all new spark plugs and wires. Get the car back about 2 weeks later very hard to start, then would shake and shutter for about 5 min. then it would drive basicaly normal, other then a little boggin down in second gear. I drove about for about 30 min after getting my car back, came home put the car in my garage (warmer) Then went to start it the next day, would crank and crank but never turn over. So I had it looked at again and they said it was the disstrubutor cap, rotor, the little modual in there, and that I should change the spark plugs. Well I put the cap, rotor, modual in and then it started but sputterd for a few seconds then died. Then it had no life after that. I havn't had time to put new spark plugs in yet, could that help. (ps, they also told me that on of my pistons were stuck, that was reson for the shuddering)(also the rotor, cap, and modual all seemed to be fine, so i don't think that that was the reason, so it basicaly got all new parts for nothing. Oh well better now then later) So if you guys think that you can help me with this problem that would be great. Getting a ride from my mom and having to borrow her minivan is getting really old. Battery connections (especially the positive wire to the starter motor are ok?) Other then that, I don't know other than a broken head gasket (coolant in motor) or fautly fuel pump.

I have noticed that when the car did run for that hour, that at the start the exhaust and even when I attemp to start it now, black smoke type nasty smelling crap will come out the exhaust and appears to come out near the cat too. Could messed up plugs plus clogged, or shot cat be causing my car to not start? My cat looks a little sad, so I am thinking about just pulling it off and putting a straight pipe through. Can you guys see any problem doing this? Also just too se if that cat is the problem could I pull it off and try to start the car with that gap where the cat was unfilled? This wouldn't hurt my car any would it?

(in replay to GTA's post) the fuel pump is fine, carb sprays perfectly, engine coolent is fine, and just had change the oil, about 3 weeks ago. So I hope that helps diagnose this really anoying problem.

Try replacing the coil, my car had similar problems. I just happened to have a used coil in my garage from an 84 cutlass, so i made the switch and now it runs great.
