Proform roller rockers, has anyone heard of these?

Someone on here mentioned them a while back. Supposedly, they are only $140, are available in 1.6 ratio, and will fit fine under centerbolt valve covers. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm using them for 8000 miles so far... no probs. I have guide holes though and not using self-aligners. The fit under center bolt covers with a little 'massaging' of the oil baffle for the pcv (Just smash it in a little with a LFH)

alright cool.... where did you get them? And were they really $140? Are they full roller or roller tip?

Jeg's has them , and the regular style is $149.99, but the self aligning style is $169.99. They are a fully machined full roller rocker. A friend of mine has a set of the regular style 1.6's on his car and has been running them for over a year w/ no problems. They appeared to be a nice, high quality rocker from looking at them, and they operated very smoothly by hand.

2 questions

1) there are several versions of these available, but only a couple in 1.6 ratio. Which of these fits an 87+ 305 or 350 TPI?

2) What is the effective lift with these installed? I'm sure someone must know what the effective lift of an L98 cam with 1.6 rockers is.

I'm not sure of the answer to question #2, but let me see...

SBC 1.5 3/8
SBC 1.6 3/8
SBC 1.5 7/16
SBC 1.6 7/16
SBC 1.5 3/8 Self-Align
....
ect...

First don't automatically assume you need self aligners. Take your valve covers off and make sure you don't have any pushrod guides. I have an '88 and had them but some people I know have '88's w/o them and needed self-aligners. I think this was the X-over year. I got mine through jegs, and while your at it, why not get their "street screw in rocker studs" I installed them with the heads on the car. Actually I changed the springs, retainers, and keepers and tapped the stud holes with the heads on the car (I really didn't want to take 'em off) Just get an air hold tool to keep the valves up. And put towels down in the intake if you take it off. Ooops. I forgot, you have to take the intake off to make sure to catch all the chips that come down into the intake port. The exhausts are into coolant jackets. I just took a 7/16-14 tap to 'em. It's amazing how little of force it takes to pull the pressed in studs out! So I don't regret going through the trouble. The street screw in's are made by mr gasket and have a small shoulder for jamming them requiring no machine work to the boss (for the large hex). Put sealer on the threads and using two nuts jam 'em to abouts 40 lbs/ft. Make sure you get all the metal chips. I used a piece of cardboard covered in axle grease. If you accidentally drop some in just push down on the intake valve with the air on that cyl and they'll blow right out. Into the lifter valley if not careful. This may be a little more info that you care to hear about but pressed in rocker studs scare the hell out of me. Especially with high lift and 1.6's.

If you have guide holes get the SBC 1.6 3/8
If not get the SBC 1.6 3/8 self-aligning

Make sure to check this. Also is you have guide holes and goto 1.6's check for bind in the guidhole (1.6 ratios move the pushrod closer to the valve) Mine were OK but I heard stories that involved clearancing.

Good luck!

Mr J, Take the gross advertised lift of the L98 and divide it by 1.5 The take the number you got from this and multply that by 1.6

I'm don't know what the stock L98's lift is, but here is an example of how to figure it, if you know it.

.450" / 1.5 = .300"
.300" X 1.6 = .480"

I have a set of 3/8" Proform 1.6 ratio rockers in my closet right now. They are very sloppy in the bearing areas of both the fulcrum and tip. They work fine but are more noisy than others.
I switched to Harland Sharp which are the best quality rollers I've seen yet.

Proform is a perfect example of "you get what you pay for"...or maybe "buyer beware"

Is it really worth saving a few bucks on roller rockers....I look at it this way, how much does an engine rebuild cost after one of those rollers decides to spit it's internals out and circulate it through the motor? Just a thought
