Car temperature and A/C problems

Alrighty, did a search and came up empty...

To start things off, when I bought my car a year and a half ago neither the A/C nor the heater worked. The week I got her I had the A/C replaced, so now that works (and STILL works, VERY well might I add) but still no heater. Now heres my problem. When I turn on my A/C, it blows out close to 40* at it's coldest, but when it's on it heats my engine up VERY quickly. I can put my temp. quage in the redline if I leave it on long enough. Now I know my fan works properly, and even though I could use a new radiator, I did just flush it and re-fill it (been doing it since I got the car, so that isn't the problem) so I'm totally lost. Is there a way to get this to stop? Also, how would I fix the heater so I can at least have a way to cool my engine down if needed? (right now if the heater is on it just blows regular air) Thanks for any input guys...

what kind of thermostat you using. Sounds like it may be stuck open, ( easiest first) Do you have the dual fan setup is the second fan coming on?
Just a couple of thoughts...

When I bought the car I think the fan belt and radiator fluid were still from the factory. Especially that fan belt, when I revved the engine it seriously sounded supercharged...gah I miss that!

I guess it wouldn't hurt to change the t-stat. When I'm not using the A/C my car stays right around 220 (straight up) after about 20 minutes of use. At night it hovers at about 45* to the left...

sometimes a wine like that can mean bad bearings in the waterpump...but if it came from the factory like that who knows....is there any seepage from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump ?

Remove the upper radiator mounting piece (runs along top of cowl and holds rad in).

Using a light look down between the radiator and condensor for a build up of debris. On some cars I've seen that area up to half full of leaves, paper, styrofoam cups, you name it.

Does the overheating occur when at a stop/low speeds or highway, or both?

Riley's: That noise came from a 2 miles away from breaking serpentine, doesn't make it anymore with new belt... And yeah, it's still there

RBob: Thanks! Didn't think of that, I'll check that out this weekend when I have some free time. As for the temps it'll go down at speed (if cruising) but in stop/go driving it'll heat up perdy quick.

As for leaking, I don't leave a spot anywhere....

mine did that after i swapped in my 350... it would heat up BADLY very QUICKLY... but the fan in our cars comes on automatically when you turn on the AC.. that is to this day how i keep mine cool (aside from a 160* therm) when i sit in a drive thru for a little while and she breaks 220, i just turn on my ac and she goes right back down to normal... the debris might be a problem, and water pump doesnt seem to be the problem because it cools when you drive as mine does when you get circulation through the radiator... more than likely the thermostat, especially if you are running a 195* (which is stock) depending on how often you drive and how hot it gets, you could put a 180 or a 170 in there... i live in Southern Cali and i drive 80 miles a day, so the 160 was a good investment for me. you dont want to put one that cold in there if you dont live in a hot climate because your engine wont ever get to the correct operating temperature and your ecm will stay in closed/open loop (dont remember which one) and the car will run sluggishly. Aside from the thermostat, debris and fan, there really isnt much else that could cause that.. Good luck!

whoops, didnt even read the ARIZONA thing on ur avatar... you could deffinately go with a 160 out there... good luck ;-)

LOL, I was about to say, I got ya beat as far as hot climate is concerned

But yeah, mine is the exact OPPOSITE. If I turn my A/C on, it heats up even faster! I can go from 220 to redline in less than 15 minutes with my A/C on in the middle of the day if I'm in stop and go traffic. My fan works great, I know that much, so I'm stumped.

Ohh yeah, does anyone know anything about my heater problem I asked about earlier?

I know turning on the heater cools down the engine rather quickly if at high temps. Had to do that a few times in my old PUP. That, and my girlfriend seems to be cold blooded or SOMETHING...lol

ahh, yes, my girlfriend as well... when we drive with the convertible top off she wants the heater on half the time...
