Computer Timing Advance

Okay from what I understand on the LG4 the computer will advance the timing on the car. Well I have an 82Z and the computer is having issues. I can't get the codes off of it right now but the Check Engine light is on. Well I notice a big performace differnce when it is on as apposed to before it comes on when I frist start the car. I also know that I can disconnect the timing wireing harness from the distro. What would happen if I did that and set the timing? Its not as if I am not already throwing codes. Would this be a wise thing to do or not? Eventually I will be pulling out the QuadraJunk and replacing the distro but I don't have the money nor the time to do that right now. Can someone please help me, Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you may have lost power to the computer if you can't get codes, and the Check Engine light stays on. This could be a blown fuse, that also goes out to power some of the solenoids (Something to look at if the fuse is blown) I've seen this caused by a wire (pink w/black stripe) getting pinched in a valve cover.

If the engine light is on steady all of the time. You will need to completely unplug the computer and put the ignition back on. If the light goes out then you know the computer is the problem. Atleast thats what i've gathered from experimenting and reading around in various things.

IF the SES light stays on with the ecm completely unhooked you probly have a short in the wire that goes to the SES bulb.

Sorry I just re-read my post and it makes no sense. The check engine light comes on I assume after it goes into closed loop. (Or open, whatever one happens after warm up and the car runs off of the sensors.) Also I can get codes but I haven't gotten them yet. I have a computer to do it at school but I have not been able to use it yet. I don't have auto this quarter and I am trying to get a bud to do it for me but none have had any time yet. Thanks again!

Ohhh, that makes much more sense now. Once you get the codes i'm sure you'll be able to get alot more help. With the light on i'm sure its going to run like crap(unless the light thing is that small short where the light comes on for no aparent reason). With the light on it is probly running in open loop or something. Get the codes with a paper clip or some other form of conductivity across the A and B terminals. You don't have to have a scanner to get codes.
If you don't understand about jumping the terminals from what i've said i'm sure you can do a search through all of the previous threads to find out the procedure.

Okay but once I get the codes I don't really care about them. For me this is a temp. solution untill I go to no computer. So I just want to get my (I assume its only) timing back into the car. So am I able to disconnect the wiring that goes to the distro so it will no adjust the timing. I know that this will throw a code but then again, I don't really care at this point. Will this do any thing really bad to my car if I did? Thanks again!!

To answer your question breily, No.

Unplugging the Dist and setting initial timing to whatever will not perform the way you want it to.

To remedy your situation in the most inexpensive, rapid way possible, get the codes that you are showing and see whats ****ed up.

Then Fix it.

Right now it seems as tho You are going into "Limp home " mode, Due to some problem with one of your sensors.

if you unplug the dist, you will essentially remain in limp home mode all the time.

Go get the Codes, and report back to us.

The other solution is switching to a vaccum advance distributor, and a Non CCC carb.

Well, here is the good news, no more codes. I don't know why but I threw on a 14X3 for some random reason and when I plugged the port on the carb it stopped. I ran it for ahile never came on. I was stunned but didn't think much about it. Then I ran it over 150 miles stright, no problem. I have my timing back and its all good. Thank you to those who helped. Sorry I know that I tood the half *** way to fixing it but I dont' really car for the quadra jet, and do plan on getting rid of it. Just lack of time/funds and other things I am not able to. I had the feeling why should I put time and money into sensors that I will not be using in a month or two. But anyhow, thanks again!!!
