No 3rd gen, but a bowtie
I saw a good offer in the paper for a city fleet car.... Namely a '95 Caprice (pretty cool big car) and 100,000 even on the clock.
It has a shot tranny and I could get it for dirt. I am mechanically whatever and am almost done building a 700r4 I have no use for at this moment........
OK, the ad states it's a 350. I was under the assumtion the caprices got a smaller LT1-like motor (not sure, but I think in the 280's cu. in. range, and iron headed)
Question? Were 350's an option to city fleet vehicles? (it's not a cop car, just a public utilities vehicle)
Are they trying to screw me? I know this is more of a 4th gen ?, but someone has to know. Is there a way of telling the diff quickly (by eye?).
It seems like a car in great shape they are sick and tired of replacing parts on, and just want to get rid of because of the trans.
Will a 700r4 work with this car if it has a 4l60e?
Anyone know what the VIN place and codes are for this car?
Any help well app'cd!

Engine: There were two engines available in this car, the 5.7L LT1 and the 4.3L L99, which look identical. You cannot tell them apart just by looking, so you better look at the emissions lable on the radiator support for the displacment -OR- check the RPO codes for LT1 or L99
Tranny: This car does have the 4L60-E, and you could probably put a 700 in its place, but the Check Engine LIght would ALWAYS be on, since the PCM runs constant diagnostics on the tranny, and would fail everytime. You MAY also have to replace the Throttle Body with one from a '93 F-Body, since I don't think the '95's had provisions for the TV Cable. Your speedo also would not work. The 700's VSS isn't compatible with the 4L60-E's speedo.
In conclusion, you could rebuild the 4L60-E up yourself if you did a 700. Many people just can't grasp the concept that the 4L60-E internals are almost IDENTICAL to the 700's. I bet I could tear down a 4L60-E and a 700 and just hide the case and Valve Body, and most people wouldn't know which guts came from what! So you should be able to handle the 4L60-E. Good luck w/ the project if you decide to undertake it!

Thanks for the info. Could it be possible to just put the computer controlled valvebody onto the 700 to avoid downtime?
How about using a computer from a 93 camaro to control the motor (they still had a reg 700 i think). Will the smog ****'s see this?

NO WAY!!! The valvebody won't even come close to bolting up, the cases are different. Notice I said the internals and hide the CASE and Valvebody. The case had to be changed to accept the different valvebody.
I don't think the '93 computer will fit on the '95 wiring harness, or even controll it properly, I think '93 was a "batch fire" system, using just a MAF or MAP, and the '95 is a sequential fire, wich uses BOTH MAP and MAF.
Why don't you just yank out the tranny and fix it? Its a B-Body car, one of the easiest to ****** a tranny out of. Try pulling one out of a T-Truck (4x4 jimmy/sonoma) they really suck.
