Timing
its a pretty stock set up here. carbed 305, manual transmission.
what should i set my timing to?
I set it to 8, but when i plug the vacume advance in, it idles at like 2000 and wont go down. so im thinking 8 is probably a little too advanced.
can someone who knows please tell me? thanks.

Sounds like you're plugging the vac advance into the wrong place. There shouldn't be any vacuum on its port at idle, so plugging it in at idle isn't supposed to make any difference.
8° should be fine. Assuming of course that your timing marks are accurate.
